Folowing the rise of ISIS in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East in 2014, many Ezidi people were displaced as they fled fom the terror that took over their homelands. The genocide carried out by Islamic State saw over 5,000 Ezidis kiled and thousands of Ezidi women and girls forced into sexual slavery. More than 500,000 Ezidis found refuge in camps.
How has Ezidi settlement in Armidale over the past five years progressed?
This is a recording of the Armidale Meet The Candidates forum which was convened by New England Visions 2030 and held at the Armidale Bowling Club on the 4th of September, 2024.
Candidates were arranged alphabetically according to the leaders of the groups, and ungrouped candidates. Each of these candidates answered ten questions which had been sent to NEV and addressed to up to three candidates. After this, questions from the audience were taken.
The Armidale Bowling Club doesn't have a facility for broadcasters to connect to their PA system, so the audio was recorded by microphones throughout the room. As a result, there is some unavoidable reverberation.
This recording is unedited, other than adding a compressor enhancement to the primary recorder.

Sam started his travels at the age of 18 and he’s now 21 and has been travelling continuously. He is driving a Chamberlain Tractor, towing a trailer and with the chassis of a Cessna aircraft on its roof. Sam is driving around Australia raising money for the Royal Flying Doctor, Dolly’s Dream and Farm Angles (formerly Drought Angles). He has hit his target of $250,000 and broken the world record for the world’s longest tractor trip (25,500 kilometres). His dog travels with him.
Michael Barry (President of St Augustus Conference of St Vincent de Paul Society supporting Freeman House Drug & Alcohol Unit). Michael spoke about the CEO Sleepout on 30 August held at SportsUNE. Their fundraising goal for homeless people is $30,000. Five weeks out from the Sleepout they only have 19 participants and would love to have double this number if possible. Participants will sleep on the floor and will be supplied with a sheet of cardboard to sleep on and a beanie (BYO sleeping bag!). The guest speaker will be Garry McMillan, who will talk about his ‘homelessness journey’. In the last 12 months, due to cost of living pressures, there are 30% more people experiencing homelessness and if someone owns a car (as their only form of accommodation), they aren’t regarded as being homeless! To register for the Sleepout go to vinnies.org.au/communitysleepout or call Michael Barry on 0448 647 005
