Each week, Luke Grant chats with an ordinary Australian who has achieved extraordinary things.
This week, Luke chats with the former Western Australian Premier, Peter Dowding, about the incredible story of his Uncle Bruce Dowding.
Bruce Dowding was a young Australian teacher who arrived in Paris in 1938, planning only to improve his understanding of French language and culture.
Following the Nazi invasion of France, he became a leader in escape and evasion during World War II.
In fact, he helped exfiltrate hundreds of Allied servicemen from occupied France and paid the ultimate price.
His service led him to paying the ultimate price, and he was beheaded by the Nazis just after his 29th birthday in 1943.
Peter Dowding tells the story of his uncle in the book: ‘Secret agent, unsung hero: The valour of Bruce Dowding’.
