  • I Spent My Teens Saying “I’m Not Māori” – Jenny-May Clarkson on Her Kauae

Jenny-May Clarkson spent her teenage years hiding her culture. At almost 50, she chose to wear it on her face.

In this episode of 2nd Half, Sir John Kirwan talks with Jenny-May about her moko kauae, the traditional chin tattoo worn by Māori women. She talks about why she chose it, the people she went to first, and what it meant to wear it proudly on national television.

Her mum had been waiting years for this conversation. Her aunty’s only question was, “Why have you waited so long?” And her great-grandmother’s kauae lived on only through the memory of an uncle who used to sit on her lap and run his hand over it.

Then the conversation turns to courage. Jenny-May talks about why, at 52, she has stopped worrying what other people think, and the lesson her son learned jumping off a wharf in Paihia.

“What other people think of you is none of your business. Your business is your business.”
