Born in the Second Century

3. First Thessalonians Late and Spurious. Part 2.

Listen Later

First Thessalonians, the so-called letter of Paul supposedly from the 40's AD, is shown to have actually been written by a pair of anonymous, power-hungry clerics 70 years later. Chapters three through five are here covered.

Anyone who listens to this episode can learn about the true origins of the infamous "rapture" passage, and also about Timothy: a fictional Christian superhero who may hold a key to unlocking the mystery of Christian origins. Through a word and style analysis, this late and fake letter is also shown to be based on 2 Corinthians.

We continue our voyage through the pages of the New Testament, as host Chris Palmero takes to the seas in the scrappy privateer vessel that is BORN IN THE SECOND CENTURY.

Opening reading:  Jesus' workplace harassment of a Samaritan woman, from the gospel of John. This incident reflects a schism between Samaritans and Jews that's in fact not really attested until about 150 AD.
