Tune in to this week’s riveting episode of 3 Hosts in a Beacon, where we delve into the intense revelations of Beacon 23 Season 2, Episode 5, aptly titled “Song of Sorrow.” Last week left us dangling on the edge of confusion, but this episode weaves a clear path through the intricate tapestry of secrets and lies, shedding light on the complex past of Dosto, the enigmatic new character who emerged from the portal.

Dosto’s backstory is a saga of survival and betrayal. Accordingly, we learn that he was part of a desperate group called the Sibarians, ship-breakers who fled a ruthless galactic purge initiated by the super-AI Aleph. As Dosto and his party seek refuge, the truth about his actions—or lack thereof—slowly surfaces. It’s a tale of a man who, when faced with dire circumstances, chose self-preservation over solidarity, leading to deep-seated distrust among his companions.

    New Mouths to Feed

Consequently, the tension mounts as the Sibarians arrive at Beacon 23 in their makeshift escape vehicle. With them, they bring not only the stark truth about Dosto’s cowardice but also a plan that threatens the fragile balance on the beacon. Iris and Halan, our steadfast beacon keepers, find themselves at a moral crossroads. Torn between compassion and caution, they decide to reserve judgment, a decision that leads to a precarious détente.

The climax of the episode is both chilling and dramatic. As the Sibarians perform their haunting “Song of Sorrow,” a prelude to what seems like a communal meal intended to foster unity, their true intentions are revealed. The song serves as a lullaby of deceit, and before Iris, Halan, and Dosto can grasp the gravity of the situation, they are rendered unconscious, leaving the beacon under the control of their duplicitous guests.

For the inaugural episode of the second season of “3 Hosts in a Beacon,” we’re diving deep into the heart of darkness—or should we say, the beacon’s light?—with the much-anticipated return of “Beacon 23” on MGM+ entitled, “Godspeed”. Picking up precisely where the dramatic finale left us breathless, we find ourselves reeling from Kier’s harrowing decision to eliminate Aster, thereby severing a crucial lifeline for Aleph. This episode unfurls the intricate dance of allegiances and appeals as both Aleph and the Column—the enigmatic terrorist faction Kier is entangled with—vie for Halan’s support in their cause.

In this episode, your hosts Paul, Inez, and Gabby will dissect the complex web of motivations driving our beloved (and beleaguered) characters, exploring the ethical and emotional turmoil that pulses through the beacon. We’ll ponder over Kier’s chilling choice, the intricate dynamics between Halan, Aleph, and the Column, and, of course, that edge-of-your-seat finale where Halan’s decision leaves everyone in the lurch, pleasing no one and complicating everything.

Join us as we navigate the murky waters of loyalty, betrayal, and the desperate quest for connection in a universe that feels increasingly isolated. “3 Hosts in a Beacon” promises not just to illuminate the shadowy corners of “Beacon 23” but to spark conversations that resonate with the depth and complexity of the human spirit, even (or especially) when it’s adrift in the vast expanse of space. Don’t miss our breakdown of the season’s explosive opener, where we’ll share our theories, our favorite moments, and even some behind-the-scenes tidbits to light up your listening experience.

The inaugural season of MGM+’s Beacon 23 comes down to “Adamantine”. In an episode invoking an unbreakable quality in its title, the occupants and visitors to the beacon each made their case as to whom the title best describes. Aster’s drive to learn about the rocks she came to know as relics has never wavered. Halan’s commitment to Aster, which might have looked in doubt has also shown to be unbreakable. What about the zealot Kier and his steadfast faith? As predicted, uber-AI Aleph makes a return appearance on the Beacon, and his own focus on the Artifact hasn’t changed in 200 years.

Paul, Inez, and Gabby discuss this topic at length, as well as the events of this cliffhanger episode in what will be the last podcast in this series until it picks up again in April. Be on the lookout for more no-holds-barred discussion and debate in just four short months!

Suddenly, Aster remembers that she was born and partially raised on Beacon 23.

Alright. Let’s just accept that so we can move on with the story. After all, many more important things happen in “End Transmission” than Aster’s conveniently timed epiphany. Kier returns to the beacon, but this time he has Column hard-liners Saldana and Finch in tow to add brawn to his now religious-minded brain. While those two add a certain urgency to the events of the episode, Kier’s only desire is to prod Aster’s memories and eventual communion with the Artifact. No big deal.

Also, Bart tries to reconcile his own memories and the realization that Solomon, who had been the only human he’d completely respected, had erased them.

Paul, Inez, and Gabby spend their longest podcast so far this season discussing the plot as well as Bart’s big decision. Listen for these points as well as predictions as to what may come in the season finale.

Another episode outside the timeline concerning Halan and Aster, “Beacon Twenty Three” fills in even more of the Beacon’s story. In Bart’s possibly biased retelling of his own history, we learned about Dr. Ree Avalon’s tenure as the Beacon’s first keeper. It was during her time there that people began interacting with the Artifact. Similar to Aleph’s transcendence from a couple episodes ago, Avalon’s close contact with the Artifact resulted in – something. Whatever it was though, she did not return to the Beacon.

We also learned about a version of “The Shining” in space featuring a young family and the unknown and possible malignant presence of the Artifact in their lives. Bart acted as nanny and playmate for the child, Parsim, whom we learn later becomes Aster Calyx.

All of this took place as a ruse to keep a potential bomber from fleeing the Beacon after attempting to destroy it. Gabby constructs a coherent possible timeline for all of the events in this episode.

Listen for another round of wild theories from Paul, Inez, and Gabby and you’ll be treated to a clash between the Vivar sisters!

When you saw the title of this episode, were you thinking of the fictional boxing hero from Philadelphia? Or did you think it referred to a talking space rock? Given the wacky directions things are starting to go on Beacon 23, no one would blame you for expecting the Italian Stallion himself to set foot on the space station. Alas, Beacon 23 viewers were treated to the latter – a space rock with a peculiarly familiar New York-style accent to stir the narrative pot further this season.

Paul, Inez, and Gabby say a lot about this episode in this podcast. They probably produce more theories about the rocks, Aleph’s possible use for them, and the rest of the characters (including the AIs) than could ever possibly come true, but that won’t stop them from trying. In this podcast, you can expect several wild theories and predictions about what may be in store for them as the shuttle from QTA makes its inevitable approach.

With a quick jump back in time 180 years before the previously seen events of the show, viewers were given their first glimpse of the size and galactic impact of what’s been happening on Beacon 23. In “God in the Machine”, we met Milan Aleph, CIO of the mysterious, expansive QTA and a man on a mission to force humankind to move beyond mortality. Countering his cold, logical indifference stands beaconkeeper Sophie, a woman overflowing in the emotional expression of what it means to be human.

In this podcast, Paul, Inez, and Gabby examine this message in a bottle for clues about what it all might mean for Halan and Aster. And Bart! Especially that modern reincarnationvery of HAL.

The hosts all throw out so many theories in this one, something has to stick. You’ll have to listen to find out.
