3 Minutes of Leadership

One of my favourite definitions of leadership is "to develop human beings through the work they do"

Which is why one of the most important responsibilities is to show that you, as a leader, are a committed learner.

When you do, you'll make leadership (and yourself) much more approachable.

You'll inspire and create a team of learners.

When you do, great things will happen,.

I've come to think of an interview as being a conversation between people to see if they want to embark on a journey together.

To that end, the way you invite people into the conversation is crucial.

These three questions will set the table for an engaging, honest and connecting conversation.

Setting and executing on the goals that matter most requires commitment, accountability and structure.

One of those rituals is the positive check-in.

A dedicated time to come together to review progress, make new commitments and learn from your successes.

Here are 4 simple steps to make your positive check-ins something special.

The quality of our questions determines the quality of our leadership.

The most effective leaders operate in the spirit of inquiry by asking generative questions every chance they get.

In this new segment, you'll learn what a generative question and each week I'll drop a great question you can use with your team.

As a leader we speaketh and expecteth our word to be the law of the land for all eternity.

Except it never works out that way.

People seem like they are resisting change.

So what do we so often do?

Assume we're dealing with insubordination.

What if there is something else going on?

Something that every human being experiences..

"Does anyone have any ideas?"

Silence.

"Come on team. Someone must have an idea?"

Crickets.

Then the narrative in your head starts up....

"Why won't anyone answer? This is super awkward. What does the fact that they won't say anything say about me as a leader???"

Are you letting people off with implied commitments only?

The quality of the outcomes you create is guided by the questions you ask.

We've all been there - hosting a meeting that goes completely sideways where people complain about all the things that are wrong broken or missing.

You're standing there and have no clue how to get this meeting back on track.

It's the worst!
