3-Part Series of A Pediatrician's Perspective: Part 2: Teen Skincare: Separating Facts from Fads

Listen Later

“The young tween girls today want skincare as birthday gifts at their parties. That’s all they want: skincare, skincare, skincare,” says Dr. Lisa Klein. “This is a problem. It’s the latest craze, and it’s not okay. It’s not just about wasting money; these kids are damaging their skin.”

In this episode, part two of “A Pediatrician’s Perspective” series, Andrea Hecht and Dr. Klein talk about the rise of teen skincare trends driven by social media. Dr. Klein warns against using harsh products that can cause more harm than good and emphasizes the value of simple, age-appropriate routines for sensitive teen skin. She encourages open conversations between parents and teens about skincare choices and promotes a holistic approach to skin health, reminding us that what we put on our skin affects the entire body.

Quotes

  • “We have to be more educated and knowledgeable about what’s in our products, and understand that children’s skin is different from adult skin. Kids have healthy, sensitive skin that doesn’t need much.” (03:37 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
  • “I’m not shaming parents—I hear you. I’m a mom. Parenting is not for the weak. We want our kids to have fun and be part of fun trends. And you can have safe, fun skincare. You can have multiple products, but they should be multiple safe products.” (05:19 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
  • “Let’s create good habits. Let’s not believe everything we see on social media. Just like with everything else we teach them about social media, not everyone looks like that—everything’s edited. Just because you hear something doesn’t mean it’s true. The same goes for skincare, so we have to be very careful.” (07:09 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
  • “The key is simplification. It also involves having the conversation, educating your kids, and understanding that skincare is not just a toy—though I don’t know if ‘toy’ is the right word as they get older. I know my daughter enjoys doing ‘get ready with me’ and ‘get unready with me’ videos, and it becomes this whole thing where they do a haul of what they got. But we also need to make sure they’re using safe products.” (08:28 | Andrea Hecht)
