3. Rest

We all need rest, sounds so simple but why is it so hard for us to allow ourselves to rest?

I know I have always struggled with allowing myself to rest.

• Burnouts in my life - scolding myself and more recently spring 2020 which lead to therapy
• Feeling that rest should be simply a change of activity - sometimes it works but sometimes it can be a poison that keeps us in the burnout cycle.
• ‘Feeling lazy’ if I rest - looking at nature for inspiration. Winter season is there for a reason, trees can't be all green and luscious if they don't rest in winter; or animals. Recognising that it is so natural. Constant hustle is the lie that got sold to us by consumerism - which attaches our self-worth to how much we produce and work.
• Cyclical being - how normal it is and how necessary for our wellbeing
• Being mindful of what hides behind my desire to rest - eg watching Netflix for hours on end to run away from the fear of doing something new
• How I see rest now - walking, reading, being in silence (not consuming constant information)
• Importance of routine - healthy anchors that surround the day and allow a simple way of being. Going to bed around 9 pm, reading, meditation in the morning, yoga, no emails in the morning only creative work.

What helps

• Learning to tune in to myself
• Allowing myself to listen to myself and not just fight it (sweets before my period starts!)
• Change of activity - going for a walk if feeling stuck
• 'eat the frog' to stop procrastinating
• Saying to yourself 'I am enough'
• Self-nurturance - my journey with it.
