Susan Guillory Phipps challenged Louisiana law to change her birth certificate to change from “colored” to white back in 1982, which became a media sensation and made history. Rhinelander v Rhinelander was a divorce case in the Roaring 20s that made tabloid headlines that stated the bride passed as white to marry into a white wealthy family. But that was not the true story.
