In late 2014, Cleveland PD received a 911 call about a young man waving a gun near a recreation center. When police arrived and tried to detain the subject, he reached for his waistband and was subsequently shot by one of the officers.

The gun turned out to be a pellet gun that resembled an actual firearm, and the young man turned out to be 12 year old Tamir Rice. He died of his injuries a day later, and the police and dispatchers came under close scrutiny after his death.
