Do we need an Uber-like intervention to disrupt the
construction industry? According to Clayton Christensen, the grand-daddy of
Disruption Theory, the answer is a resounding no. His argument is that Uber is
not a good example of disruptive innovation. No question that Uber has
disrupted the taxi industry, but the power of disruption theory, according to
Christensen, is that it reveals the true nature of disruptive innovation, and
Uber doesn’t fit that bill. If we really want to promote and better manage the
rapid and fundamental change to the industry that many current industry
challenges demand, it is essential that we first understand the true nature of
disruptive innovation.
