Gabriel started as an economic and tax reporter at The Times before transitioning to finance, where he spent 14 years in various investment positions at hedge funds. In response to the EU's new climate law, Gabriel and his partner identified an innovative business idea and founded CBAMBOO in 2023, which uses software to help companies meet the requirements of the carbon border adjustment mechanism.
“CBAM is an unusual regulation”
CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) is, according to Gabriel, a “very unusual, new EU regulation - a hybrid of trade and climate law aimed at reducing emissions.” It ensures that CO₂ emissions from certain carbon-intensive imported goods are priced, creating fairer competition for energy-intensive EU producers.
How to get the data from suppliers
Under CBAM, companies must now report the CO₂ emissions linked to the CBAM goods they import into the EU. This is a big change - even international businesses have to follow these new EU rules and share emissions data. According to Gabriel, “The biggest challenge for companies and importers is obtaining accurate data from their supply chains. Another challenge will be the bill coming towards companies that import CBAM goods to the EU.”
How will CBAM affect the manufacturing processes for CBAM goods?
CBAM sends a strong signal to invest in cleaner production methods for goods like steel and aluminum. Many of these technologies haven’t had enough funding so far. As Gabriel puts it, “CBAM is an attempt to push global markets toward investing in future green technologies.”
