Friends Missing Friends

32. Empathy

Listen Later

Today I talk about empathy, my feelings on it, and how it relates to grief (including how to talk to someone who's grieving!), referencing Brené Brown's incredible advice. According to her, empathy has 4 main parts:

1. Taking the other person's perspective

2. Staying out of judgment

3. Recognizing the emotion in the other person

4. And then communicating that to them

And another hot tip...empathy almost NEVER starts with the words "at least..."

"Empathy is not connecting to an experience, its connecting to the emotions that underpin an experience"

-- Brené Brown
