What is intimacy? The Hebrew word for intimacy is Yada: to know deeply and completely from the inside out. Intimacy has several forms: physical intimacy (hugs/ sexual intercourse), emotional intimacy, intellectual intimacy, experientially intimacy, and spiritual intimacy.
However, all forms of intimacy have one thing in common: nakedness in front of another… being exposed to the point of vulnerability with others.
The foundation of intimacy is TRUST. We can see as far back in the Garden that Adam blamed Woman before God and no longer trusted her. Afterwards, Adam and Eve no longer resorted to trust in each other; it was about survival. For many of us that admit to having trust issues, we have raised the bar on trust so high that others can no longer satisfy our trust criteria.
Here's the thing about trust: when we rely on self or others over God, the result is personal and relational disappointment and ultimately idolatry. Could it be that our trust issues aren't related to other people so much as the unpleasant past experiences that we vow to never repeat again? Could the fear of God result in the ability to trust whoever God sends to heal you, to move you forward, and to help guide you?
THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, TRUST, INTIMACY…
