Joëlle is a Belgian marine marine biologist pursuing a PhD in Marine biology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. She started her career as a marine mammal biologist in 2010 and started her own research project with the non-profit organization Association ELI-S (@Eli.scientific) she founded in 2016. The Cetacean conservation project of Nicaragua is a community-based conservation project based on a scientific program that gathers baseline data on whales and dolphins occurring along the pacific coast of Nicaragua (Central America). Implying local communities in her project is, according to her, essential for environmental conservation. With her PhD she wants to understand population dynamics, distribution and habitat use patterns of cetaceans and especially humpback whales.
In this episode Jill and Joelle talk all about Joelles interesting path to her PhD, and some difficulty faced along the way!
