Listen Later

Welcome to episode 200! Here’s a link to the answers for yesterday’s exercise — and here’s a previous revision episode on arguments.

Today’s exercises: which of the following are valid arguments?

Remember: An argument is valid if and only if there is no logically possible situation where all the premises are true and the conclusion is false at the same time.

  1. Plenty of people try to win marathons by doing lots of training. If training alone could help you win races, then plenty of people would win marathons. Plenty of people don’t win marathons.
  2. Some cats are grey, and some cats are Persian. So, some cats are grey Persians.
  3. Some cats are animals. Some cats are Persian. Therefore, some animals are Persian.
  4. Australia has six states. Therefore, Australia has an even number of states.
  5. Georgia loves Sam. Sam loves Bill. So Georgia loves Bill.
  6. July 20th is Philosophy Sunday. July 20th is this Sunday. So, this Sunday must be Philosophy Sunday.
  7. X is greater than Y. Y is greater than Q. Consequently, X is greater than Q.
