From basic to advanced tools for argument, with detailed historical references and rebuttals, The Philosopher’s Toolkit: A Compendium of Philosophical Concepts and Methods is a structured book that takes you through step by step. As you might expect, it features basic philosophical terms and concepts explained and while is great for the introductory reader, is also a fantastic refresher for those who are already familiar with the subject.
I have both the first and second edition, and the original entries have been expanded and updated, with more on the traditional philosophical arguments, and further reading included. What I particularly enjoy about The Philosopher’s Toolkit: A Compendium of Philosophical Concepts and Methods is its accessibility — with a well-outlined index and a keen sense of how detailed you need to be to unpack difficult concepts. It even has a light sense of humour throughout, that helps make what is, after all, an instruction book, an enjoyable read too.
