365DaysOfPhilosophy 50 - Appeal To Popularity Bandwagon Fallacy

Listen Later

This logical fallacy is the last I have for the week — also known as “appeal to the people” or argumentum ad populum. And like previous fallacies I’ve mentioned which are easy to remember, this fallacy focuses on how popular belief or the appeal to the majority consensus can lead us astray.

It’s also known as the bandwagon fallacy, how everyone gets on the bandwagon and follows where its going, regardless of how right it might be.

The reinforcement of mass opinion can be very strong, and it’s a very powerful thing to fall for. It’s important to check sources and realise that just because ‘everyone says so!’ — doesn’t necessarily make it so.

If you’re a supporter of this blog and podcast series on Patreon, I’ll be posting up an exercise worksheet on the fallacies we’ve covered these past few days — you can join and get the extended interviews and more additional resources at www.patreon.com/kyliesturgess.
