Marriage is more than a relationship between two people. Scripture presents it as a covenant designed to point beyond itself—to Christ and His church.
In this episode, Skyler and JR ask three questions:
What does it actually mean to say that our marriage is a ministry?
Marriage is not ministry because a couple has a platform, teaches a class, or starts a podcast. God uses marriage itself to sanctify us, expose selfishness, teach sacrificial love, and give us opportunities to reflect the covenant faithfulness of Christ.
How does a marriage minister beyond the husband and wife?
The grace God pours into a marriage is meant to overflow. Through children, hospitality, discipleship, mentoring, church community, friendships, and ordinary faithfulness, a husband and wife can use what God has entrusted to them for the good of others.
What happens when our marriage doesn't look like a great witness?
The Christian witness of marriage is not perfection. It is the gospel. Christian couples still sin, hurt one another, struggle, and sometimes need help. But confession, repentance, forgiveness, humility, perseverance, and reconciliation can themselves become powerful demonstrations of grace.
The goal isn't for people to look at a Christian marriage and say, “Look at them.”
The goal is for our marriages to continually point beyond themselves and say:
“Look at Him.”
What happens to our relationship with the local church when military service takes us thousands of miles away?
Skyler and JR are joined by Pastor BJ Walters and his wife, Christin, for a conversation about the local church, deployment, and what it means to remain one body in Christ across the miles. BJ brings the perspective of both a pastor and Air National Guard chaplain preparing for his own deployment, while Christin and JR share the perspective of the families who remain home.
Together, they discuss why church membership is about more than Sunday attendance, how deployed service members can remain spiritually engaged and accountable, how churches can care well for military families, and why reintegration requires the church just as much as departure does.
Wherever military service sends us, we remain members of Christ’s body—and no amount of distance can change who holds us together.
Seventeen years ago, Skyler and JR made a covenant before God to walk through life together.
For their anniversary each year, Skyler creates a video montage of their life and memories from the year behind them. But this year—after months of deployment, thousands of miles apart, and more missed moments than either of them would have chosen—he couldn’t find a song that captured what he wanted to say.
So he wrote one.
In this special bonus episode of 3 Fold Cord, Skyler reflects on 17 years of marriage, God’s faithfulness through every season, and the truth that has remained at the center of their marriage: Christ is the strand that holds them together.
Then, with a little help from AI to turn his lyrics into music, Skyler shares an original anniversary song written especially for JR:
“Always and Forever.”
Happy anniversary, JR.
Across every mile. Through every season. Always and forever.
“A threefold cord is not quickly broken.” — Ecclesiastes 4:12
Children, Calling, and Covenant — Discipling Our Children Through Deployment
Deployment changes more than a family’s schedule—it changes the way children experience home, security, and time with their parents.
In this episode, Skyler and JR talk about discipling children through deployment rather than simply helping them endure it. They discuss how to acknowledge the real sadness of separation, model trust in God’s providence, and use ordinary moments as opportunities to point children toward Christ.
They also reflect on the brevity of childhood, the idea of only having so many “summers” with our kids, and how that reality can produce greater faithfulness instead of guilt. Through Deuteronomy 6, Romans 8, Psalm 90, and the support of the local church, they consider what it looks like to raise children who remember not how strong their family was, but how faithful God has been.
Communication When Connection Fails explores one of the greatest challenges of military marriage: staying united when technology, time zones, and emotions seem to work against you. Skyler and JR discuss the communication habits that have strengthened their marriage, the role of prayer as the most dependable line of communication, and why repentance and forgiveness are essential when words fall short. Rooted in James 1:19, Ephesians 4:29–32, and Philippians 4:6–7, this episode offers practical encouragement and gospel-centered hope for couples seeking to pursue unity through every season of separation and struggle.
In a world that celebrates big moments and major accomplishments, it's easy to overlook the quiet, ordinary work that makes up most of our lives. But what if those everyday moments are exactly where God is shaping us?
In Episode 5 of 3 Fold Cord, Skyler and JR discuss how the gospel transforms the daily grind of marriage, parenting, military life, and work. From folding laundry and leading your family to deployments and demanding careers, they explore how Christ calls His people to faithfulness—not just in life's biggest moments, but in the thousands of small acts of love and service that often go unnoticed.
Together, they answer three important questions:
• Why do we struggle to see ordinary responsibilities as meaningful?
• How do we love our spouse well when we're exhausted or overwhelmed?
• How do we remain faithful when no one seems to notice?
Drawing from Colossians 3:23–24, Galatians 6:2, and Luke 16:10, this conversation reminds us that our everyday work becomes worship when it is done for Christ. The gospel changes our perspective, our purpose, and ultimately the way we love those God has entrusted to us.
Whether you're serving in the military, supporting a deployed spouse, raising children, or simply trying to follow Jesus through the routines of daily life, we pray this episode encourages you to see God's extraordinary grace in ordinary faithfulness.

In this episode, we’re joined by Matt and Chelsea as they share their experience navigating deployment while being on different pages spiritually.
Matt served in the Marine Corps during their deployment, while Chelsea remained at home walking in faith. Together, they reflect on what sustained them, what challenged them, and how that season shaped their marriage.
In this episode:
• What helped—and what was hardest—during deployment
• A look back: how perspective changes over time
• What carried them through the heaviest moments
• How their marriage has grown through hardship
This conversation offers encouragement for couples facing distance, spiritual differences, or seasons of strain—and points to the grace that meets us in the middle of it all.
In Episode 3 of 3Fold Cord, Skyler and JR explore how covenant marriage and military service intersect under the Lordship of Christ. Drawing from Ephesians 6:10–18, they unpack the Armor of God and examine how their marriage became a place of spiritual equipping for seasons of deployment, separation, and sacrifice.
How do you navigate two sacred callings? What parallels exist between covenant vows and military oaths? And how do you honor both without allowing either to become an idol?
This episode is a call to anchor identity in Christ above every role — spouse, soldier, parent, or patriot.
In Episode 2 of 3Fold Cord, Skyler and JR discuss how deployment and long separations expose fear, deepen trust, and cultivate dependence on Christ. With honesty and biblical encouragement, they explore the temptations that surface during distance and the sustaining power of the gospel when spouses cannot carry each other. This episode reminds couples that Christ holds steady when life pulls them apart.
In Episode 1 of 3Fold Cord, Skyler and JR introduce the podcast and share the biblical foundation behind its name. Centered on Ecclesiastes 4:12, they explore what it means to build a marriage held together by the gospel. This episode lays the groundwork for the season, offering honest reflection on faith, covenant, and what listeners can expect as they walk through marriage, distance, and discipleship together.

We’re Skyler and JR, a husband and wife living out three callings: One as children of a Holy God, one to each other in marriage, and one to service, either in the military, in the Army of God, or in both. Our story is one of distance and devotion — learning what it means to stay united in Christ even when deployment, duty, or life’s demands do all that they can to pull us apart.
Our podcast was born from our conviction that a threefold cord is not quickly broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12). Each episode invites listeners into honest conversations about love, leadership, separation, and spiritual endurance — all through the lens of a Christian worldview.
Our hope is simple: to encourage couples, military families, and believers to see that the gospel not only holds us together — it strengthens every bond, every battle, and every homecoming.
Faith. Marriage. Mission.
We hope you enjoy our podcast where our faith in our Lord and Savior, our marriage, and the military life are woven together by the gospel of Jesus Christ.
