In this episode, Dr. Mallika Nocco (she/her) talks about her work at the intersection of academia and agriculture. She shares her journey into scientific research, the life decisions that shaped her early career, and the importance of mentorship.
Mallika is a Cooperative Extension Specialist in soil-plant-water relations, director of the Conservation Irrigation Lab (irrigationlab.com) at the University of California-Davis, host of the Water Talk Podcast (watertalkpodcast.com), and co-founder of Plant Love Stories (plantlovestories.com). After studying cultural studies & comparative literature, Mallika did a five-year stint in medical sales and fell in love with soil and plants through the Master Gardeners. She followed her heart to grad school and became captivated by environmental biophysics or the study of water, energy, and carbon cycling by plants, soil, and creatures. She is a 2014 EPA STAR Fellow and 2017 David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow who is passionate about policy-relevant science and communication.
