The struggles of a middle-class family accentuated by the existing patriarchal limitations are portrayed in this short story by Ismat Chughtai. The man of the family, trapped in toxic masculinity, has to live and die in the stigma of being unemployed. Chughtai’s short stories laid bare the lives of women in a predominantly male familial and social set up.
