Lisa deSouza
After attending the prestigious boarding school, Deerfield Academy, Lisa deSouza chose Columbia University to pursue her higher education. While living in New York City, Lisa also attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and The School for Film and Television. During the time she worked in the fashion industry, she also started her career as an actor in the off-Broadway theater scene. However, she soon learned that her passion (and strength) was in writing and directing.
After 25 productions, some of which won local awards Lisa soon found herself drawn to a new medium, the web. She moved to Los Angeles where she started producing and creating web content. Her work with many San Francisco Bay Area companies led her to take a seven-year hiatus from the “industry” while she pursued a successful career in the tech space. During that time Lisa established herself as a creative executive and digital media producer who made a career pushing the boundaries of content creation and interactive marketing.
However, her heart always yearned to be artistic. After selling her company and buying a ranch in Santa Clarita, CA Lisa found herself taking long hikes with her dogs or riding her horses (literally) into the sunset. Her time spent reconnecting with nature and (most importantly) herself resulted in her writing again. As with her days on stage, writing soon led to directing. “The Film” marked her directorial debut. Since then she has written, produced and directed three other shorts, seven commercials, two music videos and two web series. She is slated to direct (in 2023) two commercials, three music videos, a TV pilot, and a documentary. She is also in pre-production for a feature.
In addition to a very active tech consulting business (what pays the bills) and a production schedule, Lisa is the Founder and Executive Director of the Santa Clarita International Film Festival (SCIFF). Now going into year 3, SCIFF has already established itself as one to watch as it is growing rapidly, has five star reviews, and is incorporating, in addition to a film program, music, comedy, theater, visual arts and potentially a “taste of Santa Clarita'' in 2023. What Lisa is most proud of is SCIFF’s commitment to social issues. She has given many non-profits a platform to showcase their work by partnering them up with movies that speak to the good work they do. Finally, SCIFF is also committed to training and education and has partnered with Yes I Can Unity Through Music and Education (YIC Unity). SCIFF has developed a training program for YIC’s students and then gives these students internships on many of SCIFF’s projects.
