Kai Mata is back on the show to join me on this very special V-Day. A day that nurtures love, kindness, education, awareness, and celebrates diversity! Kai joined me all the way back on episode 15 (which feels like a lifetime ago).
Kai is an Indonesian singer and songwriter. Kai’s family fled Indonesia in 1998 to avoid ongoing political and civil unrest. Kai is a passionate advocate for human rights, equity, and equality. She uses her music to tell stories and foster empathy. She regards her personal achievements as releasing an album, touring the USA and being the only openly “out” LGBTQ+ musician in Indonesia. Kai is kind with her words, playful with her delivery, yet powerful with her message. She supports and mentors young people and gives her time freely to education.
I don’t believe in coincidence anymore. I originally “stumbled” across Kai on social media, I reached out, we communicated, we gelled, I got her on the podcast, and now, I consider Kai a good friend! A kindred spirit if you will. Her influence on the community I function in has been profound. Last year, Kai and I worked together to raise awareness, support young people (and their families), in regards to LGBTQ+ rights and responsibilities via the integrated “Free to be me” High School wellbeing program. Since then, Kai has continued to support the development of support groups and provide mentorship.
This week, on Valentine's day 2020, Kai joins me to talk about love, what’s been happening in her life since the last time she was on the podcast, her experiences, challenges, and hopes for the future.
