A near-death scare sparked BetterAge—Jim Firman reveals the #1 obstacle to aging well (and the fix). We cover the Aging Mastery Program, policy wins (HICAP, Medigap reforms, CLASS), and a new NIH-funded platform turning insights into action—especially for caregivers and homebound older adults.
In this conversation with host Ron Roel, Jim shares:
    • The quintuple-bypass story that reframed time as a gift
    • Why 20% of older adults say they’re reluctant to ask for help—and how that affects every dimension of well-being
    • The surprising power of volunteering (including the “I would if someone asked me” group)

  • 45 Forward #238 - He Tried This For 45 Years and Here’s What Happened
What does a life of creative reinvention really look like #45Forward #BillWilliams In this episode of 45 Forward, host Ron Roel sits down with writer–producer–editor Bill Williams—a military brat turned TV/film consultant, presidential slide-maker, registered lobbyist, disaster-relief communicator, finance pro, and creator of the long-running email series “Thought for the Day.” Bill shares funny, startling, and deeply human stories: inventing a 90-second USPS PSA that stations actually wanted to air, launching the Benjamin Franklin Stamp Club in schools, documenting floods and recovery efforts, a week among the Hopi after historic rains, a Poland bicentennial film shoot, and what digital photography taught him about change. His timeless advice for creatives: “Don’t try to do everything. Do something, do it well—then try the next thing.” You’ll learn: How to build a career by stacking specialties—not chasing everything at once Why the right format (and length) can make or break a message How institutional perspective sharpen your questions What travel, failure, and finishing actually teach you in the long run Explore more: • 45 Forward archive: 45Forward.org • Caregiving resources: CaregivingNav.com • Bill’s site & signup for Thought for the Day: Internet-Humor.com • Bill’s book: "20 Years of Internet Humor" (available via major booksellers)

  • 45 Forward #235 - Capturing the Amazing Stories of America’s Seniors
We all love good storytellers, and the best storytellers are the ones with the most to tell—America’s seniors, who have already lived long lives. But our older generations often don’t get a chance to tell their stories. In fact, they’re not even asked. But in today’s episode, I’ll be talking with Jack York, whose mission is to change all that. Jack, who’s been immersed in the senior living world for more than 25 years, is the founder and Chief Storyteller of Talegate. He now spends his days crisscrossing the country, capturing the amazing, often untold personal stories of seniors—including those of our oldest old, 100-year-olds, our nation’s centenarians, through a project called Vintage Voices. The story of Jack York and Talegate is an amazing, heartfelt story, and today, we’ll share this story with you.

  • 45 Forward #234 - An Inside View of How Senior Centers Work
There are over 11,000 senior centers in America. They serve over a million adults every day, offering a wide variety of programs and services, from meals and nutritional programs; to social and recreational activities; intergenerational programs; and fitness and wellness classes. Most of us probably know about our local senior center, but do you know much about them? How do they actually work? What does it take to provide all their services every day? In today’s episode we look behind the scenes of one dynamic center, the Westbury Senior Center on Long Island, with Executive Director Andrea Padinha and Assistant Director Robin Lombardo. Andrea and Robin will tell us about their vision for improving the daily lives of seniors; what older folks say they need and desire most; and how they collaborate with a host of partners, professionals, staff and volunteers. It’s a demanding and often complex task—especially at a time of challenging fiscal constraints for nonprofits. But Andrea and Robin will give us an insider’s view of just how the job gets done.

  • 45Forward #233 - A Retirement Expert Assesses the Security of Social Security
There’s a lot of upheaval these days across Washington, as many federal agencies face significant cuts in staffing and programs, including the Social Security Administration. It’s not exactly clear what changes are going on inside the agency (the news seems to change by the week), but what IS clear is that many people are really anxious about the potential loss of their benefits and services—both near-term and in the coming years. Will Social Security be there for them when they need it? So today, we’re talking with Mark Miller, a nationally recognized expert on retirement planning and aging, who will spell out the many critical issues facing Social Security and Medicare today, and what the changes could mean for you. Mark is an awarded journalist, author, and podcaster who offers a holistic view of retirement security, including healthcare and Medicare, Social Security, and retirement investing. He writes frequently about retirement-related public policy issues, and his work appears at Reuters, The New York Times, Morningstar and WealthManagement.com; he also has a  Substack newsletter and podcast on retirement. Mark’s latest book is Retirement Reboot: Common Sense Strategies for Getting Back on Track.

  • 45 Forward #232 - A Psychiatrist Offers an Innovative Look at Schizophrenia
On today’s show we talk about a subject that’s carried a lot of stigma over the years: mental illness. But more recently, there seems to be a growing awareness and willingness to talk about mental health issues among both younger and older people, in part, spurred by the experiences of isolation, loneliness and disruption brought about by the COVID pandemic. We know, in fact, that one in five adults today experience a mental illness and one in 20 adults experience serious mental illness, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Certainly, we’re more open about it, but it’s still a difficult conversation. In today’s episode, Dr. Steven Lesk, a practicing psychiatrist for some four decades, discusses his new book, Footprints of Schizophrenia: The Evolutionary Roots of Mental Illness. It’s a fascinating book that offers a perspective you probably wouldn’t expect. Dr. Lesk spent his medical career dedicated to those affected by schizophrenia and, in his determination to find the answer to its origins, he integrates insights from psychiatry, neuroscience, anthropology, and perhaps surprisingly, evolutionary biology. He’s not only a psychiatrist, but a groundbreaking theorist.

  • 45 Forward #231 - How to Manage One of Life’s Top Stressors: Moving
Among the most stressful events in life, moving is often cited as a top stressor, ranking third, only after the death of a spouse and divorce. In today’s episode, we tackle the many challenges of moving—especially for older individuals and families—in our wide-ranging conversation with Robert Esposito, the entrepreneurial owner of Relocators, a multi-dimensional moving and transitioning company. The author of a new book, Nobody Move! (Without Reading This), Rob lays out his roadmap that has helped thousands of families manage the logistical complexities and emotional struggles of relocation. He’ll explain how he assembles a comprehensive range of services, from same-day moving and relocation, to clean-outs, storage, estate sales and online auctions. Rob will offer stories, advice and insights into the moving process, while answering a host of questions he’s addressed over the course of his professional career: What do families need to know before they start a move? What are the tasks people most often overlook and fail to plan for? When (and how) should family members be involved? Ultimately, Rob’s goal is to disrupt the real estate industry, exhorting other professionals to listen more to their clients and help them understand the complex journey they will be going through.
