Heaven's Gate is the second-deadliest cult in US history. In 1997, 39 of them killed themselves in Santa Fe, California, while wearing Nikes, which I'm sure the Nike PR department really appreciated. Their aim was to catch a ride on the Hale-Bopp comet, which was actually a spaceship of light, sent by 'The Next Level', an interdimensional organisation which you definitely want to be part of.
The cult's leaders, Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, secluded themselves and their 'students' for 17 years form the rest of the world, subjecting each other to 'lessons'. Eventually, the cult members were so dedicated that nine of them underwent voluntary surgical castration, which I assume was some sort of team-building activity.

Heaven's Gate still maintains a crispy, 1990s-style website, where they have published numerous theological and advertising materials for the cult. So, like any well-adjusted Earthlings, we decided to read them.
