46 - Guided NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) to Help Sleep, Stress & Anxiety.

Listen Later

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 46th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

We know that sleep is foundational when it comes to anything related to your body, and I know I am not alone in experiencing periods where the quality of my sleep is sub-optimal. There is a MAJOR difference between quantity and quality of sleep. The quality of your sleep is pivotal, because sure, you may be in bed for 8-9 hours and you may have been totally asleep for those 8-9 hours, but if you didn’t get adequate REM and Deep sleep, then you could still wake up feeling as if you haven’t slept.

I have spoken a lot about the importance of adequate sleep on the podcast, but in short, not getting enough adequate sleep puts you at risk of many diseases and disorders that range from diabetes, stroke, heart disease, obesity and dementia, to name a few. Fundamental biological processes happen when we are asleep, such as; the brain gets rid of toxic waste as well as stores and processes information, the body begins to restore important cells, releases important molecules like hormones and proteins in the name of cell rejuvenation and the nerve cells begin to re-group, re-organize and communicate, which further helps the functioning of the brain. And a happy brain equals a happy mood, body and spirit.

However, life happens! And sometimes, our nights are interrupted, or we go to sleep later than we would like, or the quality of our sleep is depressed due to things like stress, exposure to blue light after dark, eating a big meal too close to bed etc. And one of my biggest hacks to combat a poor night of sleep is a juicy NSDR session. Insert today’s episode.

NSDR stands for Non-sleep Deep rest, and it has been scientifically proven to combat some of the detrimental effects of a poor night’s sleep. NSDR has been popularised by Dr Andrew Huberman (one of my favourite people), and is essentially synonymous to deep relaxation or Yoga Nidra. And today, I will be guiding you through a quick NSDR session - so please utilise this whenever you feel like you’re fatigued, exhausted or overwhelmed, and especially if you have had a poor night of sleep. It can be done at any time of the day, and can even be done in the middle of the night if you are struggling to fall asleep or find yourself waking up unable to fall back asleep. It can be done seated or lying down. Share this with anyone and everyone, because we all deserve to have fully functioning, fully restored and rejuvenated cells!
