Today I speak with my good friend Jack Hylands. Jack is the co-Founder of FourthRev. where he and his team are actively bridging the digital skills gap by connecting leading companies and universities to deliver up-to-date, industry relevant programs. FourthRev. has been in the news a lot lately for all the right reasons having also just announced their seed funding round led by Reach Capital together with the continued support of Emerge Education and a number of highly accomplished investors.
Jack holds a BA from the University of Cambridge and a PGCE from the Canterbury Christ Church University. He is a former mathematics educator, Accenture consultant and CEO of an OPM based out of Australia - Jack went on to be the GM of strategy and new product for RMIT Online and has continued on a path of discovery at the intersection of Higher Ed, industry and workforce development.
Jack is a strategic big picture thinker, he can wax lyrical in his area of expertise and he enjoys a good debate. We cover good terrain in our conversation as we chat about; the start of the OPM; the intersection of industry and academia; our Search for meaning in work; strategy, scale and impact especially of online education; academic grades and economic mobility; the university's purpose and improving the parts that need reform; the growing disconnect between education and career outcomes; digital transformation and 4IR; moving beyond the transfer of knowledge; partnering in Higher Education; the role to be played by the big 4; the culture of Higher Ed; zero sum games versus shared value; the high priority of career outcomes; non-traditional students; project-based learning; enterprise skills and higher order capabilities; advice for edtech startups; VC in edtech; Higher Education post the pandemic; and lots more
Jack has a lot of wise things to say - he's a smart young man. I'm sure that you will enjoy the conversation.
