Many psalms speak of God’s lovingkindness based upon the psalmists’ understanding of the Torah, just like Jesus and the New Testament writers referenced the Old Testament. For David, the foundational verses most frequently used are the description Yahweh gave Moses about Himself.
Exodus 34:6-7 Then Yahweh passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “Yahweh, Yahweh God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
Numbers 14:17-20 God led Israel to the Promised Land, but they refused to enter based upon the evil report of the ten elders. They wanted to kill Moses and Aaron, appoint a new leader, and march back to Egypt. God told Moses He was going to wipe them out and start over with Moses. Moses fought for them and held God to His own words recorded in Exodus 34:6-7
Psalm 40:5-17 In the context of this psalm, David acknowledges his iniquities, and he is still convinced that Yahweh will have compassion and lovingkindness.
Psalm 51:1-2 Other psalms elaborate on his contriteness, and here we see pure faith in his God based upon his understanding of the Scriptures and God’s past dealings with him.
Psalm 69:13-18 As the king, according to Deuteronomy 17:18-19, he was required to write for himself a Torah scroll (first five books of the Bible) and use it as his guide for life and reigning as king. From Torah, he understood that Yahweh was loving and compassionate. He really believed in the depth of his heart that God’s steadfast love and compassion would motivate Him to help David no matter the circumstances. Likewise, we too should have undaunted faith when seeking God’s help because of His unchanging love and not because of our own merit or deservedness. Psalm 13:5; 52:8
The importance of understanding God’s steadfast love cannot be overstated. We are commanded to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” In this context, we are told to be “perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” We are to love like Him, so understanding His loving ways is essential. God’s lovingkindness is not motivated or determined in any way by what people do or do not do. He does not love us because we deserve to be loved; quite contrary, we do not deserve or earn His love. He loves humanity because He is love. John 3:16 reveals the inclusiveness of His love and the extent of it. God’s love is self-motivated and self-directed. (Romans 5:5-10). We should not confuse His love with His righteous and just judgments, nor should we mix it up with His discipline or punishments.
