Challenge accepted – Musical Theatre with the cast of Chicago

The 5 Mid Morning team is taking to the stage once again, this time we caught up with the cast of Chicago to learn the art of musical theatre. We asked the leads from the show Kiruna-Lind Devar who plays Roxie Hart and Samantha Peo who plays Velma Kelly to teach Stephanie Be and Yonaka Theledi a basic routine. Both Stephanie and Yonaka nailed it, and it became quite clear that maybe performance art is not producer Mike's strongest point.

In this clip Stephanie Be and Yonaka Theledi sat in the Teatro at Monte Casino and chatted to the cast and crew of Chicago. We sat down with director Darren Greeff, Kiruna-Lind Devar who plays Roxie Hart and Samantha Peo who plays Velma Kelly. 

Stephanie asks how their parents reacted to them wanting to be performers. And we hear how each of them had parents who supported them in their own rights.

Darren explains that we are learning an insert from the show called “Nowadays” it was composed originally by Bob Fosse. We take to the Teatro stage with a live band and golden backdrop. Darren runs us through the basic moves. Stephanie explains to him and Kiruna-Lind and Samantha what to expect from us.

In this clip Yonaka asks what people misunderstand about theatre performers, Samantha and Kiruna explain that they are actually athletes and not treated as such. Steph ask who they look after their bodies and voices. And the answer is that it comes down to training.

Darren has us perform the performance insert and talks us through the process. Stephanie points out how producer Mike would throw her off. Producer Mike doesn’t know what to do in the performance and just turns into a snare drum.
