5 Reader Questions! GPA Advice, Useless Classes, And Hobby Time (Ep. 25)

Listen Later

Today I'm joined once again by my friend Martin Boehme to answer 5 reader questions!

We got a lot of great feedback on the first reader Q&A episode, and you guys have kept on emailing in questions - which means it's time for another one.

You know, this reminds me of my favorite movie quote of all time:

"He who questions his training only trains himself to ask questions" - The Sphinx
Well, I don't remember training you in anything, so these must be regular, normal questions instead - so no worries, unless you're wearing watermelon on your feet.

Questions you'll find the answers to in this episode:

How do you create work-life balance when you're super busy?

What do you do about work-intensive classes that have nothing to do with your goals?
How do you gain the motivation to work on your hobbies?
Are you behind if you didn't do an internship after your freshman year?
What are some good study strategies for students who have to keep their GPA high?

Reader Q&A episodes are done Game Grumps-style, because why not? Today we're playing Mario Kart 8, and by "playing", I mean "Martin is kicking my ass."

Want to get your college questions answered on the show? Ask me anything at [email protected] - we want to hear from you! You can also subscribe to the newsletter and reply to it if you think of a question later.

Things mentioned in this episode:

Powlyglot - Martin's awesome language-learning blog

The Comprehensive Guide to Finding the Cheapest Textbooks
The Motivation Hacker - Nick Winter's excellent book on achieving everything
Habit RPG - gain experience, fight bosses, and win loot by practicing habits and getting things done!
Fluent in 3 Months - check out some lessons I learned from this book
Anki - a spaced-repetition flashcard app that helps you learn things faster

Resources of the Week:

At the beginning of each episode, I briefly feature one tool I've found to be useful, as well as one learning resource I've found enlightening.

The Tool: Packback Books - an awesome new startup that offers $5/day rentals on digital textbooks (for those textbooks you only need once or twice)

The Learning Resource: Networking Fundamentals by Colin Wright - the 2nd edition of Colin's free book on building relationships. I learned a ton from it, so check it out.

Listener Tip of the Week

This week's listener tip comes from Matt Giovanisci, who also runs his own podcast over at Listen Money Matters. Thanks Matt! Check out the episode to hear his tip.

"Hey, I have a great tip too!" - you
On every episode listener tip on each episode before I dive into the main content. Want to be featured on the podcast? I'm looking for tips in each of these categories:

General college tips - learning, studying, productivity, etc

Jobs and internships
Money management

If you'd like your tip featured on the show, email it or tweet it to me!

Also, remember to leave your name - and if you'd like me to give a shoutout to something of yours (your website, twitter profile, etc), mention that as well.

A couple great quotes from our conversation:

"College doesn't define you. It's simply a thing you're doing - and you can do other things alongside it." | Tweet This

"The best time to learn something is the moment right before you forget it." | Tweet This

"Shout-out to Paducah, Kentucky." | Tweet This
