#5 – Spirituality Through Drug Use and The Education System with Joe (Peefer)

Listen Later

In this episode Joe and myself discuss whether or not (psychedelic) drug use is truly the best way to go about achieving spirituality. Is it cheating? Does it strip you of the value you receive from obtaining spirituality without substance? These are the kind of questions we dissect in this episode.

We then continue onward to a deep discussion of self-awareness and how the education system itself lacks the awareness it needs to properly educate children.

I had a lot of fun recording and editing this podcast episode. I hope you enjoy it!

Shout Out:
This episodes shout-out is teachers. Many of them decide to be a teacher with very pure intentions in mind, despite the terrible system they have to work within. Much respect.

References

25:03 – That Vice documentary on the Japanese Cannibalistic.

29:25 – A worthy quote from Joe:

“Without self awareness, you’re just a product of your environment”

39:49 – “Say.. Marine Biology or something”:

I meant “Marine Photography” which was a passion of mine at a younger age. I didn’t really correct it, so I just kept using it as an example.

47:20“It’s very….”:

Archaic is the word I was looking for.

48:00 If you like the kind of things I’m speaking about, I highly recommend watching this amazing video:

A picture I found on Twitter.

52:09“I’ll have to look up this quote I heard, which I believe was from David Rockefeller.”:

The quote is, “I don’t want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers.” It was presumably by John D. Rockefeller, I honestly have no idea why I said David Rockefeller, he wouldn’t have even been born in that era.

53:50Joe’s reference to a George Carlin Skit:

I highly recommend watching this entire 4 minute video. Joe’s reference is at 1:40.

47:04“The French call it staircase wit”:

This name for the phenomenon comes from French encyclopedist and philosopher Denis Diderot‘s description of such a situation in his Paradoxe sur le comédien.

[1] During a dinner at the home of statesman Jacques Necker, a remark was made to Diderot which left him speechless at the time, because, he explains, “l’homme sensible, comme moi, tout entier à ce qu’on lui objecte, perd la tête et ne se retrouve qu’au bas de l’escalier” (“a sensitive man, such as myself, overwhelmed by the argument levelled against him, becomes confused and can only think clearly again [when he reaches] the bottom of the stairs”).

In this case, “the bottom of the stairs” refers to the architecture of the kind of hôtel particulier or mansion to which Diderot had been invited. In such houses, the reception rooms were on the étage noble, one floor above the ground floor. To have reached the bottom of the stairs means to have definitively left the gathering. Via wikipedia

58:27“A lot of people I see think that you either fail or succeed…”:

1:01:12“The guy who played Neo in the Matrix”

Keanu Reeves, and here’s the video of him offering his seat for a woman on the subway. (Ignore the stupid video title)

1:02:21 – The Joe Rogan Podcast with Sam Harris:

1:02:21 – “Is he black?” (This is who I thought he was talking about):

I highly recommend watching this speech, it’s AMAZING. One of the best speeches I’ve ever heard.

1:03:26 – “I know what it’s called, it’s called a spiritual…. uhh..”

Retreat. Also known as a ‘meditation retreat’.

1:14:36 – What is Sharting?

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Sharting

1:22:15 – I should clarify my thoughts:

I should add that I’m well aware that children will learn things on their own, but suppression of information about things such as sexuality can lead to children learning about it without focus on the values that adults have to offer. An example is that if a society of adults were to teach children about sex they would learn not only the pleasure/technical side, but they’d learn other things as well; How to be more accepting of their physical bodies as well as the love and passionate side of sex. When they have to learn on their own they tend to focus more on appearances and feelings rather than understanding.
Let’s say that a kid ventures into porn and has to learn about sex that way rather than from their elders. Their understanding of sex would be shaped by the standards of porn. Less-than porn standards of bodies would be seen as disgusting and unacceptable or unusual. In some instances abuse and disrespect would be deemed as ‘okay’, and maybe if the child absorbs a lot of information they might see scenarios of having sex with a relatives partner or cheating as something that’s acceptable.

I highly recommend watching this TED Talk video, this speaker can represent my points more concisely. It’s a very good video:

1:23:30 – “Reddit thread – What’s your secret that could literally ruin your life if it came out?”

I will leave this up for historical purposes.

Challenge:
Find a way to promote self-awareness within your life. Separate yourself from the constant distractions you find comfort in. Whether it be Netflix, reading, or video games, whatever it may be, It’s different for every person. Find a way to get away from all that for a brief moment in this fast paced world we live in and give yourself the opportunity to question your everyday life.
Really be sure to question the Universe, life, existence, all of the weird things that doesn’t make any sense that we’ll probably never find the answer to. It may seem pointless, but there’s a lot of value to it. And I hope many of you get to experience the value that I’m talking about.
