Baz Luhrmann is an Australian filmmaker, writer, and producer known for his visually bold, music-driven style and for reimagining classic stories for modern audiences. He first gained international recognition with Strictly Ballroom (1992) and went on to direct the acclaimed Romeo + Juliet (1996) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which introduced Shakespeare to a new generation.


His musical Moulin Rouge! (2001) was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is widely credited with revitalizing the modern movie musical. He later directed the epic drama Australia (2008), the visually lavish adaptation of The Great Gatsby (2013) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the biographical film Elvis (2022) starring Austin Butler, which earned eight Academy Award nominations and was a major global success.


Across his career, Luhrmann has become known for blending theater, pop music, and cinematic spectacle, making him one of the most distinctive directors working today. He frequently collaborates with his wife, Academy Award, winning designer Catherine Martin, who has helped shape the visual style of his films.
