Commentary: 

Righteous men and women, as well as the wicked, will all die, because "it is appointed for man to die once" (Hebrews 9:27). However, what godly people leave behind is quite different from the legacy of the wicked.  Those who honor God and live by His law (Proverbs 1:7) leave behind a memorable legacy. Those who live on recall the blessings that accompanied their lives. They are grateful that the righteous helped them grow spiritually. Ecclesiastes 7:1 says, "A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth." Psalm 112:3 tells us the righteousness of the person who fears the Lord endures forever, and verse 6 says he will be remembered forever.  Ultimately, the wicked leave no legacy except corruption and embarrassment. It's difficult to look back with pride on a life of violence and crookedness. In fact, when evil people die, those who live on are more likely to be relieved than they are to grieve. The memory of the evil one fades away and their reputation decays. Like putrefying waste, it only becomes more unpleasant over time. Those wicked people whom the world never knows fade into obscurity. Those whose evil is known are, eventually, only known for that evil.  

Over View:  

This chapter begins 375 "proverbs," which are general-case lessons or observations. These wise remarks continue the discussion of wisdom and wickedness begun in chapters 1—9. Most of the verses in chapter 10 contain a sharp contrast, with the conjunction "but" separating the lines. Often, the subject changes from verse to verse. The contrasting subjects include sons, treasure, work ethic, reputation, relationships, success, and speech.

Commentary:  

God's unfailing love outlasts the span of human life. According to this verse it extends from everlasting to everlasting. It is eternal because it is an essential part of God's nature. First John 4:8 says, "God is love." Ephesians 1:4–5 tells us God predestined us in love. This startling truth indicates that from eternity past God loved those who would put their trust in His Son as their Savior.  David assures us that God's love is steadfast. He never stops loving His people. Even when we fail Him, His love for us does not fail. This is illustrated in the story of the prodigal son, who wandered far from his father. When that son returned home, he received full assurance that his father still loved him (Luke 15:11–32). When his father saw him returning, he felt compassion. Upon receiving his son, the father threw his arms around him and prepared a joyful celebration to welcome him home.  David adds to the description of God's attributes by noting that the Lord's righteousness extends to the posterity of those who reverence Him. He always does what is right and best for those in every generation who obey Him.  

Over View:   

Psalm 103 praises God for what He has done. This includes celebration of His personal influence, as well as the way God has blessed the nation of Israel. David encourages praises from himself, from the people in general, and even from the angels and hosts of heaven.

Commentary:  

This passage is a set of specific instructions to those living in Christian homes. Paul's recent words have addressed wives (Colossians 3:18) and husbands (Colossians 3:19). Here, he instructs children with a relatively broad concept. Children are given one overarching command: obedience. This follows the teaching of honoring one's parents found in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1–3). It also represents the universal Christian teaching of living with love and respect toward one another.  Paul reminds children that obedience to their parents is pleasing to God. He has already noted that all things are to be done for God's glory (Colossians 3:17). This includes how a child obeys his or her parents. Jesus set an example by being submissive to His human parents (Luke 2:51) as well as to the will of His heavenly Father (Matthew 6:10). Disobedience to parents was considered sinful (Romans 1:30; 2 Timothy 3:2). Obedience to one's parents is the biblical expectation for children in Christian homes (Ephesians 6:1).  

Over View:  

In this chapter, Paul gives clear instructions to Christians about living out faith in Christ. Since believers have been saved by Christ, they should not participate in the sins which trap unbelievers. Sexual immorality, jealousy, slander, and revenge are not to be part of the Christian's life. Instead, believers ought to demonstrate compassion, humility, patience, and forgiveness. Above all, followers of Christ should show love. Paul also gives specific instructions for those living in Christian homes, including husbands, wives, children, and servants.

Commentary:  

When the angel Gabriel approached an unmarried virgin (Luke 1:26–27), she responded to his amazing news (Luke 1:31–33) with humility and obedience (Luke 1:38). The angel's message included references to Old Testament prophecy (2 Samuel 7:12–16; Isaiah 9:6–7). Those predictions were about the birth of the Messiah, who Mary will bear and name Jesus. The song Mary recites in this passage (Luke 1:47–55) is sometimes called "The Magnificat," and it demonstrates her familiarity with the Old Testament. Several of her comments either quote or refer to Scripture. The first part of her speech sounds very much like 1 Samuel 2:1–10. This is an example of a woman rejoicing over expecting a child.  Mary went to visit her relative, Elizabeth, as soon as she heard of her own pregnancy. Both Elizabeth and her unborn child reacted to the presence of the also-unborn Savior (Luke 1:41–42). Mary's reply here echoes that joyful response. It also continues the humble, faithful attitude she expressed when she was first visited by Gabriel.  To "magnify" God is to extoll, proclaim, celebrate, or approve of Him. This same attitude is expressed elsewhere in Scripture (Psalm 34:3; 1 Chronicles 17:23–24; Acts 10:46).  Mary's declaration also includes her admission of a need for salvation. Contrary to suggestions that she was sinless, or a component of God's forgiveness, Mary clearly notes that God is her "Savior" (Luke 1:47).  Mary, recently told she would bear the very Son of God (Luke 1:26–33), is celebrating with her relative, Elizabeth (Luke 1:39–42). Her initial response to an angelic message was humility and obedience (Luke 1:38). The extended praise she offers in this passage has become known as "The Magnificat." Most of this speech quotes or alludes to passages in the Old Testament, including Hannah's celebration when she learned she would bear the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 2:1–10).  A key point here is that Mary refers to God as her "Savior." When Gabriel first appeared, he described Mary—very specifically, in Greek grammar—as a recipient of God's grace (Luke 1:28). False belief and poor translation have suggested Mary was "full of grace" and that she passes along grace to others. Commentary:  

Paul continues to describe the amazing truth that those who come to Christ by faith are freed from slavery to the law, as well as to our own sinfulness, and are also adopted by God as His own children. Now Paul points to the Holy Spirit as the confirmation of this adoption.  God sends His Spirit to live in the hearts of every one of his adopted sons and daughters. The Holy Spirit is referred to here by Paul as the Spirit of His Son. He moves into our hearts and gives us the right, along with Jesus, to call out to God as a young child calls out to their "daddy." Abba means "father" in the Aramaic language. Because it's easy for young children to say, like the English term dada, it's what most young children would call their father. Without our own sinfulness and the law standing between us and God, we can live with God as little children do with a trusted father.  This verse helps to show how each member of the Trinity is involved in our salvation. God the Father sent the Son to save us, then sent the Spirit to live in our hearts.  

Over View:  

In this chapter, Paul uses three new methods to teach his Galatian readers an important lesson. It is futile to follow the law of Moses in order to be made right before God, since justification comes only by faith in Christ. First, Paul shows that the arrival of Christ made it possible for all people to become God's children through faith in Him. Next, Paul makes a more personal appeal, asking what has changed to cause the Galatians to turn on Paul's teaching of the gospel. Finally, Paul builds an allegory from Scripture, illustrating the difference between being born into slavery and being born into the promise by faith in Christ.
