The US presidential elections has made the history books  from the record numbers turning out to vote, early clashes between the candidates and protests that have divided the country.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has won the US election, wrestling power away from Donald Trump. The Vice President elect is Kamala Harris the first woman - and woman of colour at that - to fill the role.

Savali Leiloa Andrews  (nuu: Amanave, Nua ma Seetaga, Safotu)  is a musical director and music scholar (ethnomusicologist) of Samoan and African American heritage from Seattle, Washington. 

 

She is currently Assistant Professor of Music History at the Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music in Ohio, the oldest university institution in America to enroll African Americans and women since 1833.

Pita Alatini was born in Tonga and played in 17 tests for the All Blacks.  Alatini played 81 NPC matches for four different provinces and 72 Super 12 matches for four different franchises.  In 2004 he moved to Japan to play for Suntory Sungoliath and then the Kamaishi Seawaves in 2006

On Monday the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern named her new cabinet for the next three years, widely noted as the most diverse cabinet, with 8 of the 20 Cabinet ministers being women, 5 Māori cabinet ministers, one South Asian, 3 cabinet ministers from the rainbow community & 3 Pasifika Cabinet Ministers.

Indira Stewart was born in Tonga and raised in New Zealand.  Her father’s family are from Tatakamotonga in the village Mu’a and her mother’s Fijian side from Kadavu and the village of Tu’anuku in Vava’u, Tonga.  Stewart started out as a musician and was runner-up on the third season of New Zealand Idol back in 2006.

She later retrained as a journalist, and became the first Pacific Islander to present a weekday show at RNZ when First Up launched in May last year.  Indira has now moved on to join the Breakfast team on TV 1and joins us on the line to share her story and experience.

Kaiga Maopoopo is a Tokelauan Pacific family violence prevention programme founded in 2010.

Kupa Kupa is the lead facilitator for the Kaiga Maopoopo (Tokelau Pacific family violence prevention programme and has been involved in both the development and delivery of the Kaiga Maopoopo programme.  

Salapima Everdina Fuli has also been part of the programme firstly as a Pacific Advisory Group member of the Ministry of Social Development advocating for ethnic specific solutions to family violence. Then as the writer of 'Kāiga Māopoopo Conceptual Framework' facilitating it's formulation and development through national engagement with the Tokelau community.

London-based arts collective called In*ter*is*land Collective is a community of Moana people living in the diaspora of London and the United Kingdom..  Jessica Palalagi is of Niuean and Scottish heritage, with an MA in Art History from Auckland University her career in sustainability within the business sector is informed by her creative practice and a reflection of the Pacific.  She is a communicator, a generator of ideas and engagement and hopes to fill the world with noise from Onehunga.   We are privileged to have Jessica join us on the line to talk as one of the founding members of In*ter*island collective
