the largest Labour caucus ever arrived in the capital for their first day induction course for new members of parliament.  Among them was new MP for Mana, Barbara Edmonds. 

Barbara Edmonds is a specialist tax lawyer with a wealth of experience being heavily involved in Government’s tax, social policy, small business and economic responses to COVID-19.  The mother of eight has a great heart for the community.  She joins us on the line this morning to talk about managing to secure the Mana seat for Labour and what her hopes are for first term in parliament.

Ioane Aleke Fa’avae hails from the village of Mutalau in Niue. 

He has vast experience in the Niue culture and language as a broadcaster, educator, choreographer, translator, interpreter and researcher.  Io wrote a handbook for learning conversational Vagahau Niue for the Pacific Education Centre and he has also led, composed and choreographed dances which have showcased in previous Pacific Arts Festivals.

Palmerston North’s political scene saw a Pacific twist with the electorate and party votes giving the city two Cook Islands Members of Parliament.

Green Party candidate for Palmerston North Teanau Tuiono is of Cook Island and Maori (Nga Puhi & Ngai Takotio).

Tuiono is the highest ranked Green Party candidate outside of Parliament and the first Green MP from Manawatu.  He has a diverse range of experience facilitating and working on projects at national, regional and international level.  Teanau speaks with Ete to talk about issues he is passionate about.

Otaki has a new electorate MP in Labour candidate Terisa Ngobi, a seat that was held by National for the past 12 years.  Labour’s Terisa Ngobi won the seat with a margin of 1,267 votes.    Terisa was born and bred in the Otaki electorate and knows the people and issues facing the region.  She is also the first Pasifika Woman to ever stand in the  Ōtaki electorate.

Mailigi Hetutu is a valued member of the Niue community and Wellington representative on the Vagahau Niue Trust.  She is a community social worker, volunteers as a Vagahau Niue tutor and radio broadcaster.  We cross over to Mailigi now who is out in Porirua preparing for flag raising ceremonies part of the Niue Language week celebrations.

On Saturday night, New Zealand spoke loud & clear, with a resounding victory for Labour, by the third biggest margin in their history, in the general election 2020. Provisional results show Labour won 49.1% of the party vote, with 43 electorate seats, 21 list seats, a total of 64 seats, which would allow Labour to govern alone, special votes withstanding.

A new survey has found that more than half of all Pasifika and Māori South Auckland  voters who were asked oppose the End of Life Choice Act referendum and believe that the  legalization of recreational cannabis will have a negative impact on the community. 

South Auckland voters were surveyed in the My Truth Movement: General Election 2020  survey, designed by The Cause Collective, a social change organization focused on the  wellbeing of Pacific peoples and South Auckland communities. The purpose of the survey  was to understand the influences and preferences of South Auckland voters for the New  Zealand General Election 2020 including the two referendums.

Alongside the General election tomorrow, the country will also have it’s say on two referendums - 2 referendums - On the Cannabis Legalisation & Control Referendum & End of Life Choice Referendum. 

Late last year The ‘Doctors Say No’ Open Letter opposing euthanasia was presented to M.P.’s at Parliament. 

The Open Letter stated that ‘Doctors want no part in assisted suicide’, noting the World Medical Association, which represents physicians in 123 countries and the New Zealand Medical Association positions that “physician assisted suicide and euthanasia are unethical, even if they were made legal.”  

The letter has now gained 1,786 signatures from doctors the width & breadth of the country.
