Dr Debbie Ryan is the Principal of Pacific Perspectives - a specialist policy and research agency that has helped co-ordinate and support the Ministry of Health to set up a specialist Pacific Covid-19 Response Team. Debbie is a Samoan mother and grandmother and is privileged to serve Pacific communities as a clinician and researcher.  She talks with Ete about learning more about the effects of the virus even after people have recovered.

Cora-Allan Wickliffe is a multidisciplinary artist of Māori and Niue descent, originally from Waitakere. In recent years her practice has focused on her efforts to revive the art form of Hiapo, prior to this she completed her Masters in Visual Art and Design in Performance from AUT (2013), also receiving a AUT Postgraduate Dean’s award for her research. 

She is the Curator and Exhibitions Manager at the Corban Estate Arts Centre, is a founding member of BC COLLECTIVE and is a maker of Hiapo (Niuean Barkcloth). She has exhibited her work throughout Aotearoa and internationally including Australia, Niue, England and Canada. 

Her work is a part of major collections including The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Auckland War Memorial Museum and the Wallace Arts Trust.

Moana Makapelu Lee is an indigenous reporter of Niuean, Maori and Cook Island descent.  She is passionate about Pasifika arts, culture, language and relishes opportunities to share stories.  Moana has experience in both linear (television) and photographic journalism and is confident in delivering to online platforms. She has worked for Maori TV, Cook Island News and is currently part of the team at Tagata Pasifika.

Isaac Te Awa is of Kāti Māmoe, Kāi Tahu, Waitaha, Ngā Puhi descent.  He has a diverse interest within te ao Māori and a passion for the reconnection of taonga Māori to people, place and community.  

He is an active practitioner and researcher of Māori weaving and carving with a special interest in the revitalization and documentation of traditional technique, practice, and knowledge.

Isaac works with the team at Te Papa and joins us on the line this morning to talk about his passion for Maori taonga.

Rachel Petero is one of the mana whenua in Sth Auckland, she is the Co-chair of Ngāti Tamaoho and Co-Chair of Te Ohu Whai Ao Trusts, holds two Board Director roles on Pacific Cooperation Foundation and UNICEF Aotearoa NZ. At a local level she is a long-standing committee member on Otara Bluelight committee. 

Her business, Rise2025 Global, trains, develops and transforms Indigenous lives through her Indigenous-centred coaching, culture and commerce programmes. She has just co-authored her first book Take Your Space, with Jo Cribb, which will be available from 8 October.

Taungaroa Emile had only acted in school plays, before he made an award-winning screen debut in the landmark movie Once Were Warriors (1994). 

Taungaroa played shy but rebellious teenager Boogie Heke once again in the 1999 sequel What Becomes of the Brokehearted. In-between, he starred as a teen ex-con in movie romance Flight of the Albatross. He has also starred in episodes of Taonga and te reo series Aroha, and appeared in Shortland Street, acclaimed feature No 2, and 2011 TV film Tangiwai - A Love Story.

The Pacific Music Awards 2020 is taking place on the 30th of September in Auckland. 

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s plenty to celebrate in New Zealand’s Pacific music scene. The finalists for the 2020 Pacific Music Awards were announced earlier this year after a record number of entries, resulting in 24 finalists across 13 categories.

Pacific Music Awards Trust spokesperson Rev. Mua Strickson-Pua said that despite the challenging situation they find themselves in, it’s more important than ever to celebrate the successes of our Pasifika artists.

We’re joined now on Pacific Breakfast by Lesa Lani Alo, who has been nominated in 3 categories (unPix Best Pacific Language, PMN Best Pacific Gospel Artist, APRA Best Pacific Song) for his song “Alo i ou faiva”.

Lesa is a Dunedin based Artist and award-winning Choral Director of Samoan Descent. He is an alumnus of the University of Otago. 

He has performed with and opened for local and international acts including Six60, Paramore and the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

A Champion of Pacific Design, Art and Culture, London Pacific Fashion Week (LPFW) acts as a platform for designers living and working in the Pacific to the United Kingdom.

To do this, a select number of fashion designers from the Pacific travel to London every September for LPFW, which coincides with London Fashion Week, both to promote their brands and gain further experience in the global fashion world.  

As someone who feels very connected to the art and culture of her Fijian heritage, having been raised by strong Fijian women in Rewa Province in central Fiji, CEO & Founder of LPFA, Ana Lavekau now champions Pacific Art, Design and Culture on the platform of London Pacific Fashion Week, where she gathers together fashion designers from the Pacific region in London to coincide with London Fashion Weeks, in order to promote their own brands, and for them to see inside the global fashion industry. 

Lavekau has represented over 50 designers from all over the world.  She said, “to have our own South Pacific fashion platform during London Fashion Week is key; it provides a creative voice for artisans to show their work to the world through performing arts, creative design…they get opportunities to further their labels in the European market and feature in London fashion magazines.”
