Former Olympic champions and New Zealand representative athletes are calling on the Government to extend and widen Sport New Zealand’s consultation on the participation of transgender athletes in sport.

The group of 43 athletes include former Olympians Barbara Kendall, Lorraine Moller and Dean Kent, former Olympic Chef de Mission and Emeritus Professor David Gerrard, and New York marathon winner Alison Roe.

Last week they sent an open letter to Minister of Sport Hon Grant Robertson asking that he urgently intervene to extend consultation on the document, Draft Guiding Principles for the Participation of Transgender Players in Sport, to enable consideration by the key stakeholders who would be affected by this policy.

Sport New Zealand has confirmed it has no intention to open consultation to enable individual athletes or sporting associations to comment before submissions close on the 21st of June.

The purpose of the Networking Fono was to bring together and connect Pasifika people, leaders and organisations with an interest in engaging Pasifika communities.

The Polynesian Panther Party, celebrates it’s 50 year anniversary today. The Polynesian Panthers founded by young, New Zealand-born Pacific Islanders in Auckland’s inner-city suburbs — among them, Will ‘Ilolahia, who was the Panthers’ chairman for its first five years.

A successful community project initiated by a group of Pasifika youths in Christchurch is a finalist in the 2021 Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) EXCELLENCE Awards. 

This is the seventh year the awards have been presented, to recognise and celebrate the key leadership role local government provides and the work it undertakes to promote and grow the well-being of communities throughout New Zealand.

Christchurch City Council is a finalist in the Kāinga Ora Homes and Communities EXCELLENCE Award for Social Well-being for the Hoon Hay Park Youth Project – Community Hub & Basketball Hoops Competition.

The project began with the vision of 10 Pasifika youths, who are long-time friends, who wanted to improve their local basketball court and for it to become a safe, well-used space that was appealing for all generations of the local community.

Yesterday, Monday 14th June, was World Blood Donor Day. 

As part of this years celebrations, frontline healthcare workers joined New Zealand Blood Service in saying ‘thank you’ to the country’s incredible blood donors for helping them save lives. 

Every 18 minutes someone in New Zealand requires blood or plasma and to continue to keep up with demand, NZ Blood needs to grow the donor registry by 10% in the next 12- months.
