Tamaki Herenga Waka: Stories of Auckland, the new exhibition at Auckland War Memorial Museum, is a new permanent gallery that chronicles Auckland's past, captures its present, and looks to the future.

Over the next 4 weeks on Pacific Days we’ll highlight some of the stories that make up the rich tapestry, diversity & culture that dissect at "the gathering place of many waka"

We begin with MV Matua Interactive. This is a digital interactive called New Horizons – Keva’s Story. Melanie Rands is interviewed and speaks about her father Keva Low who came to Aotearoa from Suva on the Matua in 1946 ’s journey on the MV Matua.

The ASB Polyfest, Auckland Secondary Schools Maori & Pacific Islands Cultural Festival, is back in 2021 and will celebrate its 45th anniversary this year, from Wednesday 14th April - Saturday 17th April. 

Students will compete on five stages, Cook Islands, Maori, Niue, Samoan and Tongan. There will also be a Diversity stage featuring performances from a range of cultural groups including Fijian, Tokelau, Chinese, Korean and Indian.

The Pacific Pharmacists’ Association had a stand at this year’s Auckland Pasifika Festival at Mt Smart Stadium on 10 and 11 April. 

According to the Pharmacy Council of NZ statistics there are only 38 pharmacists that identify as Pacific, yet they are serving an ever growing Pacific population of nearly 300, 000 people. 

“This is our chance to get out from behind our counters and the four walls of the Pharmacy and have some real conversations with our Pacific people,” says Natalia Nu’u, Pacific Pharmacist and the organiser of the stand this weekend.

The South Seas vaccination clinic, located in the old MIT Tech building in Otara, began operating last week Thursday. 

We’re joined now by Dr Maryann Heather from South Seas Healthclinic for more. 

Dr Maryann Heather has a range of experience working in New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, American Samoa and China. Of Samoan descent, she is experienced in general medicine and emergency medicine but her main area of interest is primary care and especially Pacific health.

Preparations are well underway for the popular Pasifika Festival with hundreds of performers, artists and artisans taking part. 

The vibrant festival is taking place at Mt Smart Stadium this weekend on Saturday, 10 April (10am-8pm) and Sunday, 11 April, (10am-4pm).

Thousands are expected to attend the two-day festival that celebrates the Pacific cultures of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland with music, dance, arts, crafts, demonstrations, storytelling and food.
