‘Arohatia te moana’ flotilla set for America’s Cup is a campaign to get more Aucklanders thinking about Tīkapa Moana [Hauraki Gulf], and taking action to protect it, will get underway with a flotilla at the America’s Cup this Saturday. 

Led by Mauri o te Moana, the peaceful flotilla is being organised within the designated on-water spectator zones at the America’s Cup and Aucklanders are being encouraged to wear something blue on Saturday to show their aroha or love for the ocean.

Denis Rota has had a hard life, spending part of his childhood in state care, losing his father at an early age, and two years ago getting stomach cancer.

In the middle of his chemotherapy, he decided that if he survived cancer he needed to do something of value in his life.

Having worked at a timber yard before his illness he decided he would make cutting boards, butcher blocks and platter boards from recycled timber.

He is now the proud owner of a business selling his boards from a stall at Swarsbrick Landing, River Road in Hamilton all day Saturday and Sunday rain hail or shine.

Since his story featured in a local newspapers he’s been inundated with support from the local community and is now even more determined to grow his business.

Sina Aholelei Kami had dedicated the last 12 years of her life to raising funds and support for children with cancer and other incurable diseases in Tonga and Fiji.

In doing this work, she is fulfilling one of the dying wishes of her remarkable daughter, 15 year old Luisa Tae Kami, who passed away from cancer in 2008.

The Tae Kami Foundation to this day continues to raise money for sick children in Tonga and Fiji and to tell us more about the history and the work of the foundation we have Sina Kami on the line.

Risu Kalotiti is a passionate conservationist and actively promotes women empowerment.  

She is a surf coach for the Solwota Sista of the Vanuatu Surfing Association which encourages female surfers to get in the water and realise their potential.

After seeing the destruction caused by cyclone Pam in 2015 she has set up a coral garden in her village in Vanuatu and engages with local children  and her solwota sista to help restore the reefs.

The New Zealand Water Safety Sector Strategy, released in 2015, underwent a review and after consultation & feedback has now been refreshed for the next five year period, & was launched in Wellington by the Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan, Minister of Community and Voluntary Sector. 

On the eve of The New Zealand Water Safety Sector Strategy 2025 being released, Drowning Prevention Auckland sought to highlight the dangers that tamariki can get into without raising an alarm.

A graduate of Whitireia NZ and Victoria University, Tupe Lualua is a practitioner of Heritage Pacific dance and performance. 

From 2009 - 2019 she taught Siva Sāmoa on the Bachelor of Applied Arts at Whitireia and founded the Le Moana dance company in 2013, creating works such as Fatu Na Totō, 1918 and Purple Onion. Since 2014, Le Moana have hosted the annual Measina Festival and produce works by Auckland based Choreographer Tupua Tigafua.

In 2019, Tupe was awarded the Creative NZ Sāmoa Artist in Residence and prior to that she was a specialist choreographer for the World of Wearable Arts 2018. 

She danced for Choreographer Regine Chopinot in Aotearoa, Japan and New Caledonia before featuring in the critically acclaimed The White Guitar by The Conch. Tupe is currently the Senior Tutor in Movement and Creative Practice at Toi Whakaari: NZ School of Drama.
