Tautai Contemporary Pacific Arts Trust is thrilled to announce Voyagers: The Niu World, an exhibition by New Zealand-based, Tongan artists Sulieti Fieme'a Burrows and Tui Emma Gillies (will be open from Saturday 6 March with exhibition preview Friday 5 March from 6pm).

Sulieti and Tui are a mother/daughter duo who specialise in ngatu or tapa art. They explore contemporary issues through their practice of tapa painting, which is embedded in the roots of the medium and ancestors who practiced before them.

Lenny and Tai Solomona are the Directors of 1Touch Ministries.  Lenny is a graduate of the Elim International Bible College, New Zealand and a certified Personal Trainer graduating from the FITnance Personal Training College, Brisbane. 

Lenny and Tai are the Associate Senior Pastors at The Church of the Nazarene, Samoa. In 2014 they pioneered a Health and Fitness program in Samoa – Ten Week Health Transformation BOOTCAMP Challenge.  

Lenny and Tai are passionate about adding value to people’s lives, both in the physical and spiritual.

Stephen Bachop is a former top rugby player having worn both the blue jersey of Manu Samoa and the silver fern on his chest for the All blacks.

Having played for the Highlanders when Super Rugby kicked off and then for the Hurricanes, Stephen Bachop would have had more than a passing interest in watching last weekend’s first round of Super Rugby Aotearoa with his son Connor Garden-Bachop taking to the field on the right wing for the Highlanders against the Crusaders and his other son Jackson Garden-Bachop playing at first five for the Hurricanes against the Blues on Saturday.

Dr Teuila Percival QSO is a Samoan paediatrician who trained at the university of Auckland Medical school. She is very active in Pacific Health Research especially in areas of Child Health.  Dr Percival is a member of the Pasifika Medical Association and currently works at Middlemore Hospital.

She was very active and assisted the Ministry of Health in Samoa during the post tsunami recovery period and the 2019 measles epidemic.  

Apart from clinical work she also sits on a few Boards providing governance for one of our largest Pacific Health Providers in Auckland - Southseas Health Care.

Co-founder of The West Side Story and The South Side Story Facebook pages, Ligi Toleafoa is a 36 year old, born, raised and proud “Westie” currently teaching Geography and History in Kuwait in the Middle East.

She and her bestie Pili Apulu started The West Side Story page as a platform for people from west Auckland to share their life stories.  That page has been so successful they’ve had to start The South Side Story page to tell stories of our people from south Auckland.

To tell us more about how a curiosity to find out how people she knew from when she was younger has turned into two pages fast gaining popularity with our Pasefika diaspora

Shaneel Lal is a Fijian born and raised indigenous queer activist currently studying a conjoint Bachelor of Law and Arts at the University of Auckland majoring in Psychology for the Arts.

 

They are a vocal and respected activist and advocate for indigenous folk and the LGBTQ+ communities.

They are a co-founder of the Conversion Therapy Action Group. A group working to end conversion therapy in Aotearoa New Zealand.

 

They have worked alongside the Ministry of Education to design a more inclusive education system. 

 

Shaneel was selected as the Global Youth Leader for Open Government Partnerships and sat on the Amnesty International Global Youth Taskforce. 

 

In 2019, Shaneel joined the Executive Board at Rainbow Youth.

Our next guest was born and raised in Auckland after his parents migrated to NZ in the 50's.  Nia Petero went to Onehunga high and landed his first job in the freezing works Hellebys with his dad and uncles, even his wife;s father and brothers worked there too.  

Nia says he was later encouraged by his father to take up a trade so he moved to upholstery with other jobs in between for 11 years.  He started working with youth and loved that so he went on to do papers for social work.  In 2010 Nia and his wife moved back to Rarotonga.

This morning he joins us live from Invercargill to talk about as part of the last group of workers from the Cook Islands who have been welcomed in the deep South.

The Alternative to Violence Project (abbreviated as AVP) is a training program that enables participants to deal with conflict and violence in new and creative ways.   

Dr Esther Tumama Cowley-Malcolm is a Samoan health researcher and practitioner who back in 2013 at the age of 60, became the first student to graduate with a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington’s Pacific Studies programme.
