Nigel Borell is of Pirirakau, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi, Te Whakatōhea tribal descent. He is a curator, writer, educator and artist specialising in Māori art in both customary and contemporary fields of research.  Recent curatorial projects include co-curating with Zara Stanhope Moa Hunter Fashions by Areta Wilkinson, for 9th Asia Pacific Triennial, QAGOMA, Brisbane (2018) and The Māori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer’s New Zealand, to deYoung Fine Arts Museum, San Francisco (2017).  

Current projects include the curatorium to Histōrias Indīgenas- Indigenous Histories at Museu de Art de (MASP), São Paulo, Brazil (2023).  And the large survey exhibition and publication Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art currently on display at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki (2021), where he was the Curator Māori art from 2015-2020.

Peseta Fa’amatuainu To’oto’oolea’ava Lama Tone is a former top professional rugby player who went on to become an architect after he suffered a career ending neck injury playing for Manu Samoa in 2001.

Peseta studied carpentry at Unitec and became a licenced builder and designer whilst playing rugby in New Zealand and abroad.     

In 2007, Peseta graduated with a Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS) and a Bachelor of Architecture (B’Arch – Hons). The following year he completed his postgraduate studies and graduated with a Master of Architecture (M’Arch – Hons).

Peseta is also a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland for over 10 years, where he is currently teaching design and guest lecturing part time at the School of Architecture.

In 2008, Peseta formed NEW PACIFIC ARCHITECTURE LTD, a company offering both designing, consultation and construction services.

Former MP and Auckland mayor John Banks has been axed as a talk back radio host after earlier this week endorsing racist comments by a caller.

The comments were made by a caller named Richard, who said Māori culture was from “the Stone Age” and that Māori people were “victims of their own genetic background. They’re genetically pre-disposed to crime, alcohol, and underperformance educationally.”

Banks did not interject or challenge the caller and followed up by saying “your children need to get used to their Stone Age culture, because if their Stone Age culture doesn’t change, these people will come through your bathroom window.”

Khylee Quince is from the iwi of Te Roroa/Ngapuhi and Ngati Porou.  She teaches Criminal Law, Advanced Criminal Law and Youth Justice. She is the Associate Head of School and Director of Maori and Pacific Advancement at the AUT.

NZ health officials are investigating a case of the virus in the community - a woman, 56, who was infected in a managed isolation facility with the South African strain.   Australia swiftly halted its travel bubble with NZ after news of the latest case.

Minister Chris Hipkins confirmed at a press conference on 26th Jan stated that 15 close contacts had been tested. 

With the case of the 56 year woman with Covid 19 who visited various places throughout Northland we cross over to Northland to speak with one of the Pasifika leaders Johnny Kumitau who is the Co-Chair of the Fale Pasifika Te Taitokerau.

Mikaele Maiava is a founding member of the Pacific Climate Warriors and also the man behind Samoa Keyhole Organic Gardeners.

From 2002-2009 he worked at United Nations Development Programme ICT/LAN Associate in charge of the information communication technology for the UNDP Samoa multi country office.

He left UNDP in November 2009, to volunteer for one year to help his adopted parents rebuild Taufua beach fales.  In 2016 he was the Artistic Director for Water is Rising Tour USA taking 12 dancers from Tokelau to join 12 dancers each from Kiribati and Tuvalu. 

In 2016 Mika took a gardening method initially developed in Africa to help people grow food in desert areas where fertile soil is scarce. This method is called keyhole gardens and he adapted it with the help of his mentor the late Dr Malcolm so that it can be used to grow crops in low lying island nation's like his home of Tokelau where sea level rise is threatening not just land mass but also food security.

In 2021 Mika is on a personal health journey to set a good example for his family.

Felicity Maddison is an author who is based in the UK.  She was born in Northern Ireland to British and Kiribati parents – her mother was born in Abaiang and most of her Kiribati family live in Tarawa and Abemama. Felicity also has a bit of Chinese heritage on the Kiribati side of the family.  

For the last 5 years Felicity has worked as a Personal Assistant, but through her love of reading she also wanted to write. Benaghar: The Rat, The Wolf and The King’s Fool which is the first book in the YA to Adult fantasy fiction series and inspired by her Micronesian, British and Chinese roots.

Makerita Urale has been appointed in the new role of Senior Manager Pacific Arts.  This newly-created senior leadership role is responsible for ensuring the continued successful delivery of the Pacific Arts Strategy 2018-2023 and lead Pacific arts programmes across Creative New Zealand from the executive team.

With more than 15 years experience working in the arts industry as a director, producer and writer, Makerita has been a key part of the development and implementation of Pacific Arts Strategy as well as many Creative New Zealand projects focused on developing and nurturing Pacific Arts.  These have included the annual Arts Pasifika Awards, the Pacific Arts Legacy Project, events, cultural exchanges, international residencies and partnerships.

We delighted to have Makerita join us in the studio to talk more about her new role and plans for Pacific Arts this year.
