5MHz 60m Radar signal

Listen Later

There's a strong sweeping radar signal now right across a significant part of the UK 60m allocation - especially the "CW" bandlet at round 5260kHz.

It's constant and around S9 here in Shetland. I noticed recently that it sends a morse ID every 20 minutes "LMA27". A check of various online SDRs (Hack Green, Twente and a few kiwi sites around northern UK, Norway etc) shows it to be much less prominent elsewhere.

I know there was a CODAR radar set-up in the south of Shetland and another on North Ronaldsay in Orkney a few years ago - I wonder if there's a new installation running now. I'll have to investigate.

This is a short video showing the noise it makes, and how it drowns out what would otherwise be quite easy copy CW on 5263kHz.
