Join me as we embark on a remarkable journey with our guest, Michael Davis Hughes. Hughes recounts his rip-roaring adventures from his university days in South Wales to a cross-country Greyhound bus journey across the United States, ultimately landing in Humboldt County. From finding love in Lake County to his teaching pursuits in Fortuna, there's a lot to unpack as he illustrates why teaching seventh grade can be both the toughest and most rewarding experience.
We also stride into my world of ultra-endurance racing, and the lessons I’ve learned from it. I share my rigorous experiences of participating in the Race Across America twice, a backbreaking 3,060-mile non-stop race across 12 states. From pedaling through a rain-soaked rainforest in a depleted state to combating desert heat, it's a tale of endurance, teamwork, and sheer determination. What's more, it's not just about the race, but also about the cause that drives me - raising money for Hope Cam, a charity that enables children undergoing cancer treatment to stay connected with their classmates.
And then we shift gears to examine Humboldt County's dedication to investing in education and supporting students. We touch upon the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students' social and emotional needs, the county's efforts to meet these needs through Community Schools, and the legacy of educators like Kim Spalli in Humboldt County. We also underscore the importance of inclusive education, compassionate support for students on the autism spectrum, and the dedicated staff at Glenn Paul School. Through this episode, we hope to inspire you with tales of adventure, perseverance, and the transformative power of education.
