Did you know “gymnastics” is a word from Greece? Long ago in Greece, people did sports with no clothes! They liked to jump, run, and flip.

About 200 years ago, a teacher in Germany made special things for people to use: rings and bars. Now, we see those in gymnastics shows!

Today, gymnasts show strong muscles and good balance. When you watch someone do a big flip, remember—gymnastics has been around for thousands of years!

Did you know that the first electronic hearing aid in the world was invented because of friendship?

In 1898, an American inventor named Miller Reese Hutchison wanted to help his friend Lyman Gould, who became deaf after getting sick as a child. Even when steamboats made super loud noises, Lyman couldn’t hear them at all.

Miller spent four years studying hearing and invented the very first portable electronic hearing aid, called the ‘Akouphone.’ It used a carbon transmitter to make weak sounds louder—kind of like how a microphone works today! Although his friend still couldn’t learn to speak, Miller’s invention helped him hear more of the world around him.

Fun fact: the invention was inspired by telephone technology, because telephones could already make sounds louder or softer.

Did you know that guide dogs are actually trained to ‘smartly disobey’ their owners?

This is called ‘Intelligent Disobedience.’ It means when an owner says ‘forward,’ but the guide dog sees danger - like a car running a red light or a deep hole ahead - the dog will refuse to obey the command to keep their owner safe!

The hardest part of training guide dogs is teaching them to find the balance between ‘always obeying’ and ‘protecting their owner.’ They need to learn when they should listen and when they should stick to their own judgment.

And guide dogs also remember places they visit often! Some guide dogs can even take their owners to swimming pools or coffee shops without any extra directions.

Did you know that your lungs are the only organs in your body that can actually float on water?

If you were to take healthy lungs and place them in water, they would float just like balloons because lungs contain about 300 million tiny air sacs called ‘alveoli’ that are filled with air, making them less dense than water.

However, if lungs are diseased - say with pneumonia or pulmonary edema - the alveoli fill with fluid, and the lungs would sink to the bottom. That’s why forensic scientists sometimes use the ‘lung float test’ to determine if a person’s lungs were healthy before death.

Fun fact: your left lung is actually 10% smaller than your right lung to make room for your heart! We breathe about 23,000 times per day, but our lungs maintain their ‘buoyancy’ throughout.
