Burning Issues

#62 - Isolation & Voluntary Solitary Confinement

Listen Later

I've been doing some thinking and helping a few people this week and I've come up with this analogy.

When we as humans are feeling low, perhaps depressed or any sustained period of negativity, we tend to go into our shells, isolate ourselves, and effectively put ourselves into a voluntary state of solitary confinement.
See the problem with this, is that in a prison setting (where everything is stripped away from you in order to punish), the worst punishment that can be inflicted is solitary confinement.
Therefore voluntarily putting yourself into this state is a recipe for disaster.
The reason this is such a significant punishment, is that humans require social interaction and connection, without that we all suffer.
Just look at Covid and how a huge majority of people suffered mentally, for a real life lesson.
That's not to say that sometime alone isn't a good thing, it is a good thing to be able to be with oneself, with one's thoughts and give yourself time to breathe, reflect, relax and recharge.
However, if this reclusiveness should last too long (and only the individual can truly know when enough is enough), the consequences are extremely severe.
In an age of social media, Apple Vision Pro and more technology to "connect" us, we must to be hyperaware that whilst technological connection is fantastic in many ways, it is no replacement for face to face "in person" interactions. In fact is very dangerous as it lulls us into thinking we are creating deep and meaningful connections, which we are not, leading to more voluntary solitary confinement as we don't need to leave our house for any reason anymore.
