624-MicrobeAtlas: Database of Earth's Microbial Ecosystems

Listen Later

The MicrobeAtlas database is a massive, unified resource that integrates over 2.4 million microbial community samples from across the globe. By re-processing raw sequencing data against a consistent reference framework, researchers can track hundreds of thousands of bacterial, archaeal, and eukaryotic lineages across diverse environments and technologies. This platform reveals critical insights into global biogeography, demonstrating how microbial diversity patterns vary across different latitudes and IUCN-defined ecosystems. Furthermore, it illuminates the ecology of the "microbial dark matter," providing the first habitat and generalism data for the vast majority of species that remain uncultured and uncharacterized. Through its interactive web interface, the resource allows for the comparison of complex microbiomes ranging from human hosts to deep-sea sediments. Ultimately, MicrobeAtlas serves as a comprehensive map of Earth’s microbial life, helping to identify both recurring community structures and remaining geographical sampling gaps.
