The recent federal spending bill that ends the repayment moratorium on student debt and the Supreme Court decision on student loan debt forgiveness mean that loan repayments will likely resume this fall for millions of borrowers. Without the one-time forgiveness plan that was denied, there could be a significant strain on the Office of Federal Student Aid as the load of loans to be serviced is more than anticipated. Meanwhile, the government is scrambling to get a Plan B in place to provide relief to affected borrowers. But all of this ignores the real problem, namely that the student loan system is broken.  The process of applying for, receiving and repaying federal financial aid needs a complete overhaul.  There are relatively simple loan models (at least compared to student financial aid) for things like real estate and cars, among other commodities.  It may be time to take higher education for the commodity it is and provide access to a loan system that is transparent and user friendly.  In this episode I take a look at all this.  Tune in.
