68- No One is Going to Knock on Your Door
Original Air Date: Jan 22, 2021* Today, I quote Elizabeth Gilbert's book Big Magic. I remember listening to this book about two years ago while I was driving on my mail route and this section of the book almost made me run off the road... lol. Not really, but my brain came to a screeching halt when she said these words...
“I knew that nobody was ever going to knock on my apartment door and say, “We understand that a very talented unpublished young writer lives here, and we would like to help her advance her career.” No, I would have to announce myself, and so I did announce myself. Repeatedly. I remember having the distinct sense that I might never wear them down—those faceless, nameless guardians of the gate that I was tirelessly besieging. They might never give in to me. They might never let me in. It might never work. It didn’t matter.”
This made me realize no one knows what I'm doing in the confines of my apartment. No one knows that I have a dream of being a coach, a writer, a mental wellness advocate, singer, etc. No one would even know I was a podcaster if I didn't post clips on my instagram, share them to my stories, or talk about it with friends.
With that realization, I also realized no one was just going to walk up to me and give me what I wanted without showing up and showing out for it. I have to make myself known. I have to submit the stories for people to SEE. I have to share the posts for people to READ. I have to publish the podcasts for people to HEAR. I have to make the phone calls and be willing to hear YES or NO.
I can't just WANT IT.
I have to show up and DO IT.
