New Year's Day 2024 Special? What New Year's Day 2024 Special? We're back for New Year's Eve 2023 instead!
The world changed a bit too much since we started the hiatus. In this episode we talk about the horror of a coming news channel that only has AI-generated characters for anchors as well as the financial instability and panic among the big traditional content conglomerates in the United States.

In light of a world where strikes by writers and actors seem to be ceaseless we end up talking about free streaming possibilities that are out there. There are possibilities in the mix that services that exist today might not exist 90 days from now. As our world spirals we have to be ready to adapt to changes around us. Don't collaborate with scabs such as the various talk show hosts that are back to work without writers. Enjoy the rich cultural history shown in the television of the past as a stopgap while the strikes continue.

In light of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes not ending we switch gears in this episode. After all, what's the point in introducing further streaming platforms if they're not going to see new material this fall? We talk about the upcoming big thing in American television, sports programming, and why it is a nightmare to watch via streaming while also providing productive alternatives

We detour heavily from the planning syllabus to take a look at the situation in Hollywood. The strikes have now gone past the hundred day mark. Economic strains are beginning to develop. It doesn't make much sense for us to talk about paid subscription streaming services when the companies that own them are not exactly in the best of financial health.
The episode isn't totally doom and gloom. There's a marked deficit of hope in this one, though.

Inspired by a Mastodon post made by Evan Prodromou, we have a bonus special episode on the first day of the SAG-AFTRA 2023 strike. The episode discusses the situation, offers suggestions to listeners such as visiting comics shops as well as checking out "actual play" programs like Critical Role, and suggests that listeners get ready for a long haul situation.

We catch up with our planning syllabus in this episode. Before we dive into our main topic we touch upon the current strike by the Writers Guild of America-West and how the Screen Actors Guild may join them in the week ahead in terms of being on strike. We also discuss in the first half the misadventure of the film Crater and what that means for the media landscape. After the mid-way break we talk about the differences between subscription video on-demand, ad-supported video on-demand, free ad-supported streaming television, and virtual cable providers. We also provide our pick of the fortnight.
