Two innocents fall prey to a woman whose beauty bewitches - and destroys
Ralph Lambert hates Stella nearly as much as he loves her. A painter with talent but no ambition, Ralph was adrift in his bohemian Manhattan life when the statuesque blonde stole his heart. She drew him into her lair, promising a comfortable living for as long as he keeps her satisfied. Now he suffers in silence, self-respect forgotten as the woman he cannot resist seduces every lost soul who makes the mistake of turning onto Barrow Street.
Her latest target is Susan Rivers, a slender young woman who finds herself unable to resist Stellas ferocious sexuality. But when Ralph falls for his mistresss new toy, the lovers become fighters, unleashing Stellas savage cruelty, and igniting a blood feud that could tear Greenwich Village apart.
Members Reviews:
strange genre....
I don't know where Lawrence Block's head was when he wrote this, it's far from his best and I don't think it took him very long. It's pretty basic and leaves me with the impression that he just made it up as he went along with very few, if no, reviews. When he got to the end I think he realised how poor the book was so decided to throw in a really shocking and nasty ending. The book doesn't really fit in to any particular genre and it's a mixture of gay/lesbian sex, straight romance and suspense. To sum it up I'd describe the book as not particularly well written (I'm being kind) with a pretty seedy story line, possibly with a not so subliminal sub text theme that straight sex is good while alternatives are evil and get their just rewards.
